Cheapest and best gains would prob be go for a 1.8 Gti 8v engine swap. I'm not sure how much work is needed, but you can get a second hand engine and box for under £500, I paid £120 for my head and block with no service history, a bit of a gamble but guy seemed decent enough and its still fine almost a year and 10k miles later. You could always just start with a GTI cam, that'll give you a bit more horsepower. Also, iv heard that using a 16v exhaust cam will give bigger increase, only heard it once, see if anyone else can confirm that

you can get a gti 8v engine for about £200 with box if you know were to look.

GTI cam and a good panel filter, and a cold air intake will see you noticeable gains

99% sure a 16v cam will not fit.

yeah 16v cams are no good, the exhaust cam mod is for the 16v kr engine

So what is the cam mod? You use two exhaust cams or what?

yes, but you also have to cut a new keyway into the end of the shaft for the sprocket, plus chop the end off so it fits inside the head. also cam is very hard so it kills machine tools quickly, hotgolf used to do it but stopped as he was going thru machine tools like nobodys business

You can use a 8v GTI head well AFAIK. Just have to plug the injector holes.

just cam on its own works, dont HAVE to replace cam seal buit its a good idea to. but its not a good idea to do modifications without telling the insurance! if adding a cam bumps price up loads, change your insurer. HIC add something like +10% for pretty cheap

weber 32/34 carb, gti cam, light port and polish ( done at home) cut down hedgehog, homebrew exhaust and pancake filter on the top and lowered -60mm will keep you amused until you can afford a bigger insurance prem'

i know what your saying but unless they strip the engine they wouldnt be any wiser. and its not like its adding 300hp. its just making sure i get out of a side street without getting squished.

^^Fair enough but if you are going to do things like this then don't announce it on the interweb, the less people know the less hassle you get ;)

i have a 1.6 driver, with a gti cam, and exaust, and on koni's the difference is noticable =)
sounds nice and lumpy, very pokey for a 1.6, and goes round corners very well, tho im more
of a cruiser really =)

ideally get yourself a complete MK2 1.8 gti zaust on there, just that on its own made a massive difference to my old 1.6, reved much more freely and just generally felt a bit more pokey :)
