the oil pressure light is flashing on my 1993 mk3 golf. when you start it up the light flashes for about 10 seconds then stops flashing for about 5 seconds and repeats constantly with no buzzer sound. the light does this wether its ticking over or driving. the engine is a 2 litre (engine code 2E) bottom end with a 1.8 (engine code ABS) cylinder head. does any1 know why the light could be doing this?

i have just sorted mine out, oil pressure switch on the oil filter. i think yours will be the smaller switch as mine was the bigger one which came on when revved above 2000rpm. cost you no more than a tenner from auto factors, 2 mins to fit, job done.

check the blue or brown sensor, on the side of the head. smaller sensor in filter housing is oil temp for mfa
-
have i gone and changed the wrong one, thought it was the bigger one on top of the oil filter housing?
Is it definately the one on the rh side of the head as you look at the engine.
-
the large one on the filter housing flashes the light and triggers the buzzer if low pressure condition is detected when revs are over 2k rpm, so in your case this was the right one :)
On an 8v the blue/brown one on the side of the head flashes the light when a low pressure condition is detected at idle, so this is the one the OP needs to check.
16v has both of the above sensors on the filter housing, as well as the mfa oil temp.

ok thanks, my light keeps randomly coming on occasionally above 2000rpm, i take it this could mean oil pump!!

i switched the sensors over from my 1.8 engine nd thers no light no. alls good :)

could be dash issue, does the buzzer come on with the light?
-
yes always the light and the buzzer together. checked my oil filler cap today and noticed a fair bit of mayo biuld up, prob cause the car doesnt really get a good run(only do 3 miles to work). The water level is the same and always has been.
Im sure someone mentioned it could be a blocked pipe somewhere, any ideas which one may affect this.
