Title: Mudflaps
Post by: RickS on 21 February 2010, 16:11
Before you criticise me for bringing this subject up, I know it's been done to death and I've already used search to find any info I could. Seems some of you hate the idea but some like them.
I'm going to have mudflaps fitted to mine before I take delivery, to protect the paintwork and reduce road dirt on sides of car.
In the pics I've been able to find the mudflaps don't look too bad, in fact in a certain sort of way they look quite good, but the pics didn't show the mudflaps all that well. Does anyone have any good pics of a MK6 with mudflaps fitted?
Mine is carbon grey so they won't stand out too much anyway.

The surface on the mudflaps can, after some time, look quite scuffed. It can be quite difficult to renew the surface sheen. I had this problem on all my cars fitted with mudflaps.
Also, the cost of VW mudflaps for the GTi is prohibitive: £140!
Therefore, I've decided against them.

Mine will also be carbon grey...and guess what I am willing to pay extra in order NOT to get them. :lipsrsealed:

I have had my MK V now for four years and I drive the thing not polish it ...........actually I think it looks always great clean or savage ...

The designer did so much hard work behind his drawingboard...lowering it to the absurd.....choosing tyres to the absurd....and we are trying so close to get to that original...... so in that respect don't ruin it with rubber flippers........ (without being a nay-sayer).....DITCH THEM....

Erik, I take your point, and could still change my mind about this, as I'm worried about spoiling the clean lines of the car. But we obviously think differently in some areas, I like my cars to look clean and like to keep them as clean and shiny as possible for as much of the time as possible, but I also love driving them, and to me a clean car feels better and seems to drive better. [All in the mind I know]

Love the term 'rubber flipper'
Mad to spend £140 on those 'rubber flippers'.
Next he will want 'rubber flippers' in front of the wheels too, that is two 'rubber flippers' per wheel.
Now that is what you call total protection!

If you don't get them you give yourself an extra reason to clean it more often....you will never drive a dirty car anymore...

Rubber attachments (for some people) can be put to use in so many different and fabulous ways, but that one (sticking it on a GTI) is not among them...

Mudflaps for the GTi are £60 for a set. I assume your £140 was for them fitted by VW??

That is correct.
Anyway, I don't want them as they look like ugly 'rubber flippers'

'Rubber flippers' - Erik's very descriptive expression. Love it.
Hard plastic, I know - they will scratch easily as they did on some of my past cars.
Besides, the mudflaps on a Golf look ugly and make the car look frumpy. But that is my opinion.
Also, I am useless at fitting things on cars.

In Victorian times they used and re-used a pig's bladder.
Took quite a bit of skill to make and use.
I should know, I was there!

My GTI is carbon grey and I like mudflaps in general, you know, extra protection and all that. So I decided to fit VW's flaps to mine in the autumn. Now, I know you were not looking for our opinions when you posted, but I have to tell you that they looked SO ugly that I only got half way through installing one and abandonned the whole idea, took it off and returned the pair to my dealer's for a refund. Just remember that if the weather is that bad that you will need flaps, then they aren't going to make much difference: the whole car is going to be filthy

I have managed to blag them FOC mind..

No different no worse....you happy man now you have only the benefit of it keeping your car clean..

I myself find the lines of the car interrupted and the wheel is partly masked viewed from the side ...all in all more than enough reason (besides reminding me off my Kreidler and Yamaha of yesteryears) for me not to order it or ask them for my birthday

BTW I have a parking valet at work and he would be immediately out off extra monthly money (washing my car) so he would most certainly tear them off in case I do get tempted... :smug:.

I guess you must be the devil's advocate right now just to upset us...not a designer in the world !! would advise VW to go back to the 70-ties with there design.

The last designer I know got fired for less at BMW ..thank God in the end everything was allright for BMW again because a dutch dude is now resposible for the design and immediately took care of this awfull Type 5 and 6 (M5 excluded )...

Maybe most Mk6 GTI owners choose to potter round at 20 MPH, in the dry, admiring their immaculately detailed bodywork in the windows of the local wine bars as they drive by...
But in the real world I like in, doing 70 MPH in winter leaves the sides of the car manky in seconds...and stone chipped to hell in months.
So, a set of un-offensive mudflaps (fnarr!) in exchange for a cleaner, non-stonechipped car = worth doing.

It's not like they are the big red sheets of plastic that Subaru drivers have fitted then advertise the fact that they have a sexually transmitter infection, now i it?

Oh, and no, I'm not some up-myself designer...I just want a nice car to drive about in and fetch the shopping in.
If I wanted a design icon, I'd not be looking at a Golf GTI.

Erik:
You disappear for a few days, then come back and start attacking me!
It is you who really hated them with a vengeance and called them 'rubber flippers'!
Then you went on and on about rubber usage!
You cheeky Dutch devil!

Perhaps they might look a bit nicer if they did a colour coded set?, personally i don't like the look but as Ess_Three says, if function over form is your thing then that's cool too  (that's called sitting on the fence!)

Gizzy:
Having Tiger Prawns tonight!
Caught them in the ENGLISH channel on my way to Germania as I needed to check Golf production.
I am then going to invade Poland and the USSR to open up new markets for VW!
Hope it all works out.
Seems logical.
Some of this is partially in the past! :undecided:
Apart from my rubber allergy I am also allergic to seafood, so no tiger prawns for me!!  Enjoy you loon you

Why does the thought of you tossing anything turn my stomach?
Except perhaps yourself, off a bridge.

That would be murder.
Why do you want me dead?
What have I done to you to deserve this?
You seem to be a very violent person with a distinct lack of humour.
I have no choice but to report you.

No. I suggested you throw yourself off. Not murder at all.
In fact...I didn't suggest it.
Merely thought about it...

Because I choose not to have a little list at the bottom of my posts with what it's got, and what I want to add to it?

With red flippers and a swastika!
Perfect on Carbon grey or Black little 'Panzer Wagons' they can now call VW Golfs especially on the 'continent'. You see, we never had the pleasure of entertaining 'them' on our home soil!

Each to their own and all that...

Mudflaps on a GTI just ain't right.

Saying that though i had roof bars on my GTI a couple of weeks ago carrying wooden posts - that ain't really right either. :lipsrsealed:

By the way I had them on my old mk4 and they don't make much difference to to spray or chips.
