Hi,
My brother has a M reg golf with a nasty odour problem. In the boot and only the boot area there is a lot of mould growing under the carpet and in the spare wheel area.
Has anybody else had this problem or heard of a solution?
Is there an area where water could be getting into the boot area. Everywhere is dry so it is just the boot area.
Many thanks.

Water could be getting in through the rear light apertures. Have you got aftermarket light clusters? as these sometimes have sh!tty gaskets supplied with them.

+2 also check for holes Behind the numberplate as these panels rust out into holes thus when water runs down the bootlid it gets into the car.

+3 I had the same issue.

i had a leaking rear washer jet pipe as it got worn away by opening the boot all the time

+4, have the same issue, after market lights, gaskets leaking. Another job to do!

On my previous golf (1.4 CL) I'v had water sneak in through the light seal (standard lights) and boot seal near the light. took both off and tigersealed them. no probs after that!
The washer set up on the GTI seems to be somewhat different and a bit of a mess with several pipes running in and around that direction, all of which are damp to the touch, though no actual water there...

Its very good. Though come to think of it i used 'tec 7' , another brand for that job. same thing Any sealant should do really.
I took off the boot seal and ran the tiger/tec 7 into it just to make sure as there was some corrosion where the two metal panels meet along the boot lip.

i had the same problem when I had my 1.4. I put in rear lights from a gti and the foam seal that goes between the light cluster and car body was split. Changed the seal, mopped up the water and the problem was solved.

1) clean the area throughly, wait for the issue to come back- it might help you trace where it's coming from.
2) has it always been there, or something thats surfaced recently? (as suggested, changing rear lights may have let water get in)
3) if there are any plugs in the bottom of the spare wheel area, check them for any leakage.
good luck! :)
