Title: Dubplate Dan / Guy, advice on some interior plastic needed please
Post by: kells on 17 February 2010, 21:27
righteo

got myself a recaro interior over at MJ interiors gettign retrimmed

managed to get myself the highline door pockets with carpet on them and puddle lights etc, one of them had what looked like silicone (cant be sure) which im guessing was to hold a aftermarket speaker grill inplace as it was just round the edge of the speaker hole, nothing too major but me been me it had to be perfect and removed, some didnt want to come off, used some watered down white sprit which wasnt really strong enough but managed to move it, thing is now iv removed all the silicone which was in the plastic and its gone gray/white (if this makesa sence, its sort of like a gti trim thats never been treated), using auto glym bumper care to return to black which is working, but just wondered if you had any other sugestins (non silicone based in a ideal world)

cheers guys

yeah... pic might be more help

I am not sure that finish will do the job on this... sounds to me like the white spirit had a reaction where it met the plastic

I was thinking something more along the lines of this stuff... although I haven't used it

Hmmm  seems the auto glym has started to work, what was very white is now not so noticable, to the stage its very hard to get it on a pic

i left it to soak, 2 aplications, although id prefere something non silicone based reaall

not sure if you can see on this pic

doesnt look too bad but as guy said the white spirits reacted with the plastic a bit, take it you've given it a good scrub with a stiff brush and some soapy water?

tbh, i did all the door cards with a stiff brush and fairly liquid, and they all need treating now, nothing bad but its stripped all the years of silicone etc off...

this was the worst one but its looking pretty fresh again now, just gave it another coat, seems its just taking its time to soak into the plastic ??

yeah... try a good degreaser on it like megs APC/poorboys APC/autosmart G101 and see if you can remove the mark or all you will be doing is masking it

after that.. maybe some kind of dye if you don't want to be using the traditional products which usually contain silicone

I had a mark on my vinyl dash that annoyed me for years... it kept on coming back everytime I cleaned it with traditional dash products... then I used some strong APC and worked it gently and it went...

poorboys natural look is silicone free iirc

guy what did you use on your dash for the mark you had ?

i have a similar problem with the rear spoiler, forever treating the thing

sorry for jumping in on that question but i had the same prob with my gti rear spoiler and unfortunatly nothing would touch it so i gave a thorough clean with g101 neat and then waxed it with 2 coats of colly 845 then a layer of dodojuice rainforest rub, wasnt perfect but a massive improvment on what it was.

i think I used some neat poorboys APC - i found it very good for interior stuff... although it is expensive and not very economical

I use autosmart G101 now... I find it just as good and far more economical and useable for many different things

most APC's are pretty much of a muchness

what is tardis and tango ?

tardis is primarily a tar remover but I use it when the going gets tough on other bits

tango I haven't used but I hear good things about it  http://www.smartvaleting.co.uk/index.php?cmd=cat&catid=28 (http://www.smartvaleting.co.uk/index.php?cmd=cat&catid=28)
