Title: front engine mount
Post by: ianmaxtec on 16 February 2010, 22:13

Changed the engine mounts in the car about 6 mts ago, and the front mount is in bits already !
Can anybody suggest where I might get a new "stronger" mount? I found some on ebay, but £140 is way beyond what I want to pay, at the same time I dont want to buy something for £20 thats not going to last

you can get a solid mount. there is a guy thats makes his own and they re very good quality and much cheaper than vibratechnics and the like.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/vw-golf-mk2-solid-front-engine-mount-8v-16v-gti_W0QQitemZ220556631518QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item335a331dde#ht_500wt_1182

^^ its something like that.

i think the guy that makes them is on clubgti.com

i got the mk3 version on my and cant fault it! although make sure you use loctite on the mount bolts and remember to check the other bolts every now and then :)

With the solid mounts do you not find the ride very harsh ? will this not put added pressure on the sub frame ?

will the 1.3 mount fit a 86 gti without any mods ? sounds like a good idea, any pics ?

i dont know about the mk2, but the mk3 subframe has bushes in and its fine, no strain on the car. it also makes a hell of difference too. the engine doesnt hardly move with a solid mount! when i let off the throttle, and boost goes back down, its much smoother as i dont get the engine jerking back and forth.

as far as I am aware there are no bushes on the sub frame on the mk2. I did mention it to a friend who has a mk2 and he reckons the solid mount would tear the sub frame in time !

no bushes on the subframe, but there are bushes on the front cross member where the engine mount is located.

I fitted a solid front mount 8 months ago and have had no problems.

The cross member is bushed so seems to take the extra strain ok.
