Title: Actual price paid versus listed price
Post by: maxp on 16 February 2010, 19:44
Having never bought a car that wasnt a shed, with a mk5 to be the first 'decent' car,  i was just wondering what people's thoughts were towards wiggle/negotiation/haggle room on a listed price.

Taking a typical example on autotrader for 10k, what would you expect to pay.

(I know this is totally subjective to the quality of the car versus the price, but just interested on what people have to say)

From my experience....

ONO - within 10% of asking price

OVNO - within 5% of asking price

No offers - within 1-2% of asking price.

its always worth a haggle, you need to speak to them directly and offer less than you want to pay then judge the reaction. you will be going in to the situation armed with info and knowing what to offer so be brave soldier

be warned though that if its a private or "trade" sale there could be some aggressive characters. if your serious about spending 10K then you need to know you can trust the seller, hence why we only buy direct now. your more than likely able to find a car with a VW dealer for that money these days and you will get security of a warranty for a year also

Mine was listed at £10k, Said he would not take any offers as it was worth more than what he was asking (dealership, independant though!) So offered him £9.6, he said no, So I offered £9.7 with 6 months tax, to which he accepted (don't ask where he learnt maths as the road tax was £119!!!)
Always haggle, the worst they can say is no. First time anyway!

when i bought my saxo vtr i was very young and abit stupid tbh
was up for 4k and thats what i paid -i know i know schoolboy error-

was never really worth more than 3k max but i didnt really wanna haggle as i wanted the car sooo much and had travelled 2 hours to look at it

you can always work the seller down afew notches easily unless it is a VERY reluctant sale

but then theres stuff "thats priced to sell" at dealers, always a bullsh1t line, but sometimes true, if its bang on market value, it will sell.

Had at least £1500 knocked off my MY05 last May (09) with 22K on the clock. Not a big spec, but a good base for "improvement"  Bought it at the right time. They'd just sold the car to someone who couldn't get insurance, but because it was the end of the month, they'd already submitted the figures  Car had to go back on the forecourt and sell quickly!!

We walked in, offered X-amount. Agreed. They took my Audi as p/ex - gave me private value rather than p/ex. Agreed. Changed my private plate over (at their expense - took a while though!). Agreed. Qarranty (3yr) & GAP insurance. Agreed. IF we could do the deal within a week.

Simple rule being, if you're prepared to walk away from the deal, then you can go in with balls of steel!!

Moral of the story - there are deals to be had out there, as long as your prepared to wait...... and FWIW, we waited/looked for 6 months (our first challenge was finding a competent VW dealer, but that's a different story!! )

I managed £800 off the list price of mine even though VW at the time said they weren't going to discount the ED30

Mine was up for £21.5k to start with.
I emailed the guy and he stated he would go no lower then £20k. Not bad to get him to drop £1.5k over a few emails though!

About 2 weeks later I searched again and noticed the car hadnt sold, so contacted him again, thinking he may drop a little more to sell.
Went to look at the car, and we agreed on £19k.
We even shook hands etc - the deal was done.

I had to wait to transfer some money between accounts, and get time off of work to collect.
In this time he kept asking for a deposit, but I said I would rather give the whole lot in one go. He persisted, to which I politely threatened to walk!

A few days later, I went to pick up the car, but said I couldnt go any further then £18.5k.
I had a bankers cheque for £18.5k on me, and thought I would try mu luck. I still had £500 in cash on me in case he didnt accept.

Seeing the cheque was for £18.5k only, and that he wanted to sell the car, he just caved in

So I knocked £3k off of mine. However, I do believe what I paid was right and he had it overpriced at the time anyways....
