Hi Guys and possibly Gals. New here
I having some what of problem deciding what my next new car should be.
I am 25 and am looking to get my first 'performance' car and I am kinda stuck.
I have always liked the Golf Gti but have never really been able to afford one but luckily I can now however, I have also taken a liking to the Focus ST. For £20k you get a lot of muscle and although its kind of chunky, the car looks really nice. The interior also looks very nice!
But I am drawn closer to the Gti just because I have always wanted one.
I haven't even test drived one yet so what I guess I am asking is what is it like. Do you get the satisfaction knowing you've spent nigh on £23-£24k on a golf?
I am also slightly put off by the cloth on the seats (very picky) and don't know if I really want to spend an extra £1500 for the leather.
The choice of colour is not too great imo but I really like the white and red.
So guys, what should it be and VW Golf Gti or the Ford Focus ST?
Please help!!!

Mate, welcome to the forum, however what kind of answer are you seriously expecting here?
I doubt many people will say go buy the Focus but I suggest you drive them both and buy which one you prefer.
Again, welcome and to answer your question specifically I get a lot of satisfaction from having spent £25K on a Golf and love the cloth interior, but I aint you mate.
Did I say welcome BTW?

You'll probably have more success wandering into a synagogue and asking people why they like bacon sandwiches  Seriously, book a couple of test drives, and while you're waiting, Google reviews on both cars. Get a feel for what reviewers like and dislike - the pro's and con's of each model. But ultimately you'll have to decide for yourself - and I'm sure the test drives will take you in the right direction.

Welcome!
There is no contest.
Present Focus ST is a gas guzzler and will be an old model by 2011.
The interior is horrid, the exterior looks old and cheap.
The new model looks vulgar.
How can you mention Golf GTi and Focus ST in the same breath?
End this thread now please, get a Golf GTi/GTD/R or go away and stop bothering us.
Goodbye!
QED.

Thanks for posing the question!
The MK VI Golf GTi looks expensive against the ST especially with the offers that seem to be available, though I haven't studied these in much detail. http://www.perrys.co.uk/special-offer/173551/1323//googleapi?gclid=CNfRlerP958CFQ1f4wod9V_7Yg
The GTi is a very grown up car compared to the ST which will no doubt fade from car history very quickly, particularly when Ford releases it next "hot hatch" incarnation.
I think you could consider getting an ST for best price available, undercut the Golf by thousands and have a lot of fun, then get a Golf in a couple of years (it will still be as iconic as it is now, and maybe by then the MK VII will make a bigger step change than the MK VI made from the MK V). Tough times ahead for the motor industry so it should be a buyers paradise

The best way is to book a test drive of both cars. Having done that I would expect to see you posting on here on how much you are looking forward to driving your new GTI when it arrives.

I initially thought I wanted a Focus ST. I was quite set on the idea.
Then I had a look around. I took delivery of my new GTi in September.
Rolfe.

ST sounds better, but has consumption equal to that of the R32. Need I say more on that matter??
ST gets more street credit with the hoodies if thats your kind of thing
ST has recaros
Thats probably about the only good things I can find about the ST... (well I am trying to present a balanced argument )

Having driven a focus st the lump is nice but the interior is not a patch on a mk6 golf gti, yes you can save money and get the focus but will you be completely satisfied for the entire time you own the car I am certain the answer will be no. Does the st feel 4/5k cheaper yes. You will get alot of the same answers on here but I was looking at both before a bought my gtd and the interior quality of the focus let it down.
-
welcome!
millionaires, the aristocracy, 'working' people, the young and the elderly...you can see them all driving Golfs - can't say the same about ST - I mean no disrespect to ST drivers but that's a fact, not an opinion
-
EASY!!!
TEST DRIVE and figure it out for yourself
imo,
the st is good for power but had poor build quality and drinks fuel like a scotsman drinks alchohol and there are loads of them about
the Gti brilliant build quality has less power than the st but looks less chav and there are less on the roads at the moment
but as i said before
Give both a test drive

Are blind people allowed to drive?! :lipsrsealed:
I don't know what cars you've had previously that you're saying the interior of a Focus is nice, but they clearly weren't up to much. The Focus is renowned through most magazine reviews to have a terrible interior and a dreadful driving position!
You've posted on a GTI forum, so the likelyhood is that 99.9% of the people here will tell you the Focus is cr@p and the GTI is the best.
The best way is to decide for yourself and see if you can take them both out for a test drive... preferably on the same day.
The old saying is 'you get what you pay for' - and thats the case here too.
-
You will only get one answer here!
I tried the Ford and have to admit I liked it! BUT I also have to agree with the negative comments about the interior and driving position (particularly the interior!).
I also found it too 'loud' to look at although if I was 25 (again) that may well be different!
Definitely try both cars!

If it was down to cost I'd rather buy a Renaultsport Clio 200 than an Focus ST, more fun also. I think the Focus ST is starting to look a bit dated and the interior is no way as nice as the Golf. I've not got my Golf yet but the look and feel of the ones i've been in have been a class above the opposition, Better fuel economy, will age better than the ST, will still be worth something in 5 years time when the ST will certainly be almost worthless with it's poor fuel economy and even more dated looks.
There's an interesting looking new Civic Type R in Autoexpress today (could be good if you are prepared to wait).
Hang on i'm off to hide.
-
Golf GTI all the way... you'll defo pull a higher quality of bird than with a Focus ST
-
I bought my mk6 GTI in September. I looked at a lot of cars for different reasons. The ST appealed because it was another one a pretty big list of hot hatches. I also looked at the Evo 10 to get a feel for the difference in gearboxes (they have an SST system compared to DSG).
I'm going to ignore hardcore hatches like the Focus RS, Megane R R26 R (Type RR lol) and the Cupra R Golf R models.
Reading reviews the hot hatch sector can be best understood as follows.
The VXR/ Mazda 3 MPS sit at the top for power however neither have the smoothness of the golf in terms of power delivery.
The St and Leon Cupra sit in the middle.
The Civic Type R and the Golf sit at the bottom.
In the real world however each is as fast as the other. It's only on a track with two equally fast drivers that the cars will show any differences.
In terms of refinement the Golf is at the top with pretty much everything else below it in whatever order you choose.
I would look at it in terms of image. If you want a Golf, get a Golf. The Focus is not a Golf. If you are willing to live with a car which is not a GTI then the Focus is a good choice. I would take it over the Civic (although I think I'd take the VXR over the ST due to the ST's thirst).
At the end of the day though.... I still bought a GTI and I don't regret it. I would buy another one!

My advice get that focus....o......by the way I have ordered my GTI....best car I could possibly choose...
-
Please get the Focus and end this thread, PLEASE.
