The DAB isn't an add on to the head unit, it is part of the head unit so to answer your question, no.

I'm slightly confused by it.

If you look here... http://www.my-gti.com/1313/volkswagen-rcd-510-pin-assignments

The very first section states... "1. Aerial Connector : DAB aerial input connection, optional"

There must, or I would assume there must be a DAB unit can be plugged up to that connector ?

Regarding the RNS510, according to the differences here... http://www.my-gti.com/719/differences-between-the-volkswagen-rcd-210-rcd-310-rns-310-rcd-510-and-the-rns-510

It says the DAB option can be bought in the UK, for £150.

I'm pretty sure it can be fitted later, else that connector would not be there, it would be built in.

I have DAB in my RCD510 but I havent removed the headunit to have a peek behind it.

The RCD510 comes in a few different varients - one is with a DAB tuner, another is with Reverse Camera functionality.

I thought that the RNS510 DAB tuner is an add on thats plugged into the back - but since I've never seen one for sale I could be totally wrong!  Like above - it seems odd it has DAB pin outs if it can't have it.  I do know its DAB or reverse cam though... personally I'd rather have the camera

Me too. I've also heard the DAB reception can be patchy. It's definitely something i'll be looking at in the future as i have a DAB radio in the house and the qaulity is excellent.

I took that bit "DAB aerial connection" as being the aerial connection that plugs into the 510 unit. Not a standalone unit that will turn the 510 into a DAB unit.  However you never know.

From the link I sent from VW accessories it states "Please note we do not currently offer a DAB retrofit kit for this unit."  Maybe the "currently" bit suggests they might in the future

Not exactly a factory integral unit but there's always the PURE Highway..

So to sum up, to get DAB on the RCD510 you need to buy another one with it already built in, and if you want it on the Sat Nav - tough, you can't. Sound about right?

Not the way I see it, if you look at my posts on the other page. Its an optional extra in the Uk for £150 with the RNS units. So to me, as you cant buy the dab units seperately, you either spec it with it in it, or its already there you need to enable it.

Early versions had a DAB add on box, latest version has it built into the headunit. This is why theres some confusion over it.

Its an optional extra without the option to buy the extra as VW don't sell that

I should still be able to remove my DAB from my RCD510 and install into the RNS510 if I ever upgrade though, shouldnt I ?

Haven't a clue Kev but doubt it very much as its not an add-on but integral to the unit.

Are there any RNS510's with DAB on them?

I don't believe so, no. mac7's summary seems pretty much definitive...

Never seen a DAB RCD-510 on eBay, either, though...

Couple of guys on that other forum have DAB settings in their Radio section of the RNS510, but cant enable them, wither its locked down by VW or its because the DAB module or whatever is not fitted, I dont know.
