Title: Looking for a cheap trackday video camera? Then come on in!
Post by: Horney on 15 February 2010, 19:02
(http://image.ebuyer.com/UK/P0183959_C0000052_P0000000.jpg)

Size of a fag lighter and produces video like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSd4XyUNXew

Features:

    * Thumb size alloy housing
    * Manual and Sound activated recording
    * 62 Degree viewing angle
    * 30 frames per second
    * Web camera for online video chat
    * Support AVI video format
    * Low illumination, high resolution image with 2000K pixels
    * High speed recording and quick light response
    * 30 ±1 frames per second for 720x480 video output.
    * Built-in Li rechargeable battery lasting for about 2 hours
    * Charge Via USB and Power Adapter
    * Micro SD card support (8GB Max)
    * Easy operation with LED indicator
    * Support USB 2.0
    * Flexible installation with clip and bracket
    * Support JPG picture format
    * Compatible with Windows 2000 and XP
    * Dimensions: 55mm x 20mm x 14mm
    * Weight: 50g

The cost? £22 including delivery off ebay from a UK seller. Yes you read that right £22!!!!! Ok so you need a class 6 Micro SDHC card but they're about £15 so it's still cheap.

The scooby boys rate them:

http://bbs.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-general-1/815211-15-track-day-camera-cheap-ultra-small-camera-probs-interest-all.html

although they've gone up a few quid since that topic was started.

I've just ordered one so expect some examples in the next couple of weeks! Looking forward to strapping it to the front valance for some rumble strip action at Combe in June.

They are giving these away if you spend £35 on inkjet cartridges at www.ijtdirect.co.uk

Paul

PS: Trackday related I'm doing an airfield day on Monday so we shall see how the lightened flywheel works out on the track.

Well it all turned up today and it's on charge. I can't believe how small it is! It's smaller than a fag lighter by loads. I'm sooo going to lose it!

Might strap it to the Polo and record my journey to work tomorrow and see how it works.

The pics are freakishly clear for something so small

 2-3 of these would make a superb little Vid

defo screwing one into the Paxo  :lipsrsealed:

Only downside for vids is it seems you can't turn the time/date stamp off but that doesn't bother me as I only bought it for trackday usage and I want the stamp so I can get laptimes.

Just been out and done a vid in the Polo but as it's dark it's a bit cack. Just going to pop it up on oootube.

Clipped the camera to the central sunvisor above the rear view mirror so added to the fact it's very dark it's also peering through my horribly dirty windscreen.

Not to bad, will have a play on the way to work tomorrow in daylight (I'll clean that bit of screen) and upload it tomorrow night.

I like the fact it has sound too - be good for snowboarding etc

you thought of switching your headlights on?  :grin: :grin:

Well did a test in daylight (well dull and peeing with rain) on the way to work this morning and it's pretty darn good! Can't edit it for youtube at work but will do it tonight.

Only thing is the mic on mine seems to be broken as the sound level it records is really really low. Not sure whether I can be bothered to send it back though.

Trip to work this morning. Lost a bit of quality in converting it to get it up to youtube but well happy for the money.

Roll on sunday when I'm gonna strap it to the front bumper of the Golf and go for a razz!

Are you sure its a camera and not a time machine - I felt I was transported back to Feb 2008 :laugh:

Can't believe you was beaten by the truck in the vid :grin:

Seriously it looks alright for the money - it'll be nice to strap it to the outside of the car behind the wheel or something.

Looks good!

What about a cigar lighter to USB charger that some phones use to power it for more than 40mins at a time? or to recharge it on the go?

I read somewhere it won't record when charging which is a bummer!

Just got to pop out and do some shopping and then I think I'm going to try mounting it on the front of the Golf and getting some footage as it's stopped raining here and starting to dry out.

That is a bummer  :sad:
Well I guess you won't be caning the track for longer than 40mins at a time ? and while you're off the track maybe it can be charged using one of these Motorola's mini usb style car chargers.

Too wet to try outside the car in the end so bolted a mount to the dashboard.

Cool! I've just ordered one, got a few ideas for it already:

-Attach to lower grill or rear towing-eye for show convoys,
-Attach to ski-boot for skiing,
-Attach to front of longboard for hill-bombing!

Can't wait for it to get here now!  :cool:

Micro SD card finally came thru today, so I got the cable ties out for a quick run.  Stupid me decided to go out in rush hour  :rolleyes: at dusk  :rolleyes: so I've cut out all the waiting in traffic.

Clicky Here (http://www.megavideo.com/?v=EXKG7P9D)

Can anyone recommend some decent (free) video editing/converting software?  From 20mins of AVI footage (1gb), I used VirtualDub to edit it down to 3/4mins AVI (6.5gb) then used some sh!tty free software to convert it to MPEG-II (50mb).

Quality was actually pretty good up until the final conversion where it went sh!tty, but I'm not gonna try sending out a 6.5gb file!

It starts recording when the sound limit reaches a certain level. Seems a bit useless that option.
