Title: Central Locking Problem?
Post by: stazMk3-GTi on 31 July 2003, 11:16
I have a Golf GTi Mk3 and recently I have experienced problems with the central locking. The car will unlock all doors but the boot with the key or remote. But it won't lock except the door the key is in, but it will shut the windows and sunroof.

Any ideas anyone please it is really confusing me.

Cheers Carl

Is there anything I can do to check and even repair the pump?

I've posted to your other thread in the Mk3 section:-

Just an update, the problem started when I left the car with my friend to do some work on it. He phoned me to ask how to un-immobilise it as he was having troubles, my guess is that he was pressing the remote lots of times, after this the problem occured. I contacted Cobra and did all the tests they suggested and the immbiliser seems to be working all right. As I said it all unlocks except the boot which used to, but won't lock at all, but will close the windows and sunroof.

Come on chaps help me out or I will have to send it to a VW garage and it'll cost me a fortune.

Let me see if I've got this right. Are you saying it all works fine using your key, but if you use your remote key fob, that is when you have the problems you're describing?

No it is with the key and remote this problem is occuring, sorry if it wasn't clear.

Did you have a look at this:-

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richandhazel1/Central_lock/ESIS.htm

It describes a methodical approach for troubleshooting your system. Sounds to me like you have a vacuum problem, whether it be pump or a leak I'm not sure but If you work through that procedure it should help you to identify where the problem lies.

Right after checking the pump, I have noticed that it works fine when opening the car, but when I go to lock it the pump makes no noise at all and does not seem to work at all, so does it sound like the pump is buggered?

Not necessarily, it could be that it isn't getting a signal. Does it do the same if you try it from the passenger door?

Just tried and it is exactly the same, i.e. it will open alright except the boot (which it used to) but won't lock or make a noise at the pump.

Is this any help?

Hope so!

I'll have to dig out a wiring diagram and have a look. I would guess the next step would be to electrically disconnect the pump and try operating it directly from a 12V source, but I'll do a bit of reading, when I get a minute, and get back to you.

UPDATE: My battery drains itself when I leave the car off. It even reset all the clocks and computer when I switched the car off for 5 minutes.

Ah, well you need to get that sorted first.........could well be linked, I wonder if you have a short somewhere in the electrical side of the central locking system. Found a useful site this morning that might help you a little. Its Audi, but all the Audi's I have had have used the same vaccuum/air central locking system that VW use so it may well help:-
