I'm new to the site but I am looking for advice...............
I have a mk5 2005 GTi which has a loud engine ticking when the car engine gets warmer ??
The ticking seems to get louder the warmer the engine gets. It has recently been serviced with oilchange etc ???
Any pointers to the problem appreciated !!

Hi.They can be a bit noisey on tick over, direct injection or something BUT mine was the same & i wasn't happy with it & it turned out to be the small cam chain & tensioner that was knackered.Fine when cold but rattled like a diesel when warm.Mine is on the AXX engine code.

Thanks for that, appreciated I'll get that checked out and hopefully sort it.
Cheers

There have been a few of us on here who have had the chain replaced  seems to be the 05 AXX code now they are starting to do a few miles.

just bought a 58 plate MK5 GTI & the engine certainly makes a strange noise compared to most other cars I've owned...keep thinking it's a diesel on startup !!

its not just the 05 AXX cars this is a very common issue with the TFSI across the range. ive had mine done at 20k when VW say it should be 60! these threads pop up often, here and pistonheads and audi forums

What did you get changed? the cambelt and tensioner or just the chain? main dealer or indy? mine is on the AXX code and i got the same issues.

Does it sound like this?

If so you need your cambelt replacing.

...........had the belt changed before i picked the car up(part of the deal). It will need tensioner & chain replaced.

does 399 for cambelt kit (assume this includes everything) and water pump at VW sound reasonable?
You positive the sound will go once its been changed?

NO IT WONT. In all three threads you've been told its the CHAIN not the belt thats causing the diessel like noise. IIRC CHAIN and tensioner replacement is closer to £900 at a stealers. The price for the belt however is decent.
BELT is on the left hand side of the engine as you look at it from the front. CHAIN is on the right hand side and is internal to the block.

Hmeah,
I cannot respond to pm's on this site yet, not got enough posts.
I had my cambelt and tensioner replaced under the vw warranty. Not sure what engine code mine is, its an ed30 07 plate and had about 50k on the clock. I know some people have also had the water pump changed during this fix but mine was not. The car has been fantastic since having this work done and would strongly recommend getting it sorted if you have the same issue. Seems to be a common occurance.
Give me a shout if you need any further info.

That is a problem with some ed30s. The camchain rattle is something else.
