Title: Comical racers
Post by: andykram on 12 February 2010, 19:59
A while ago I think we had a thread talking about the saddest cars to have a go at racing our GTis. At the time I posted because someone tried to have a go against me in a Citroen Picasso of all things!!!!
Now I don't usually get into trying to prove points against people who want to race me but today on the way home someone in a Fiat 500 had a go. Admittedly this was one of the Abarth versions but I'm afraid I succumbed and couldn't allow myself to be outpaced by a toy car, albeit quite a nippy one!!!!
Now there's a few more of us, who else has had a comical car "having a go" at you and your GTi?

A Land Rover Discovery trying to outcorner me in a roundabout 3 weeks ago-----predictable outcome!

I had a funny one a couple of weeks ago.
Pulled up at traffic lights having just picked wife and kids up, bit of 40 mph dual carriageway going into a 30mph dual carriageway that then narrowed just up the road to single track.
Pug 206 GTI pulls up alongside me in outside lane, lights change and Pug guns it. I just dawdled along as I needed to turn off in a quarter of a mile.
Anyway, the Pug screeches off and a second or so behind him a BMW estate goes flying past me.
Couple of arseholes I thought to myself.

Got around the next bend and a large smile spread accross my face. The rep-mobile BMW was actually an unmarked police car and the guy in the Pug was getting a bit of a dressing down!!!

I haven't really raced anyone yet, but I've come up short quite a few times whilst trying to outpace traffic on the highway.

See thats what GTI drivers are suppose to do. Thats why VW used that advert for the mk2 of a red mk2 GTI sitting at a set of traffic lights with a white astra GTE16V sitting next to him. The astra driver leaning forward gripping the steering wheel watching the lights and looking angry. The GTI driver just sitting there calm and thinking idiot.

I remember when I had a MkV GTI when I lived out in Dubai and a local Arab tried it on in a Mini CooperS (great image by the way).  Unfortunately he nailed me - I'm guessing it was tuned up..

Back here in the UK I've had the usual brand of Nova boys with bean tin exhausts having a go - it's hilarious to let them think they have you and then just destroy them

Depending on what kind of road and how the drive is, I'll always make a note of making sure they see me laughing as I go past. I've had lots of various cars try it. Some are just cheeky so and so's and are probably not looking for a race and just trying to be dicks.

Not normally into racing but..

Derv (often VW GT 170/GTD or equivelent) try it on.

If I'm taking my kids to school they will win, otherwise they lose.

(Note correct spelling of lose, for the moaners.)

I had two events...the first one ME being the comical racer...  :embarassed:

The first event:

I had the GTI for a month and I went with my new toy to Germany to race everything that had wheels on it.
Until one day at the traffic lights in Dusseldorf (on the Konigsallee  :lipsrsealed:) an open BMW Z3 with 4 laughing German chaps of say 20 years of age wanted to have a go.....piece of cake I thought.....lights green we dashed off...now honestly I thought my car had broken down I simply was no match.
At the next traffic lights the dudes were still laughing and as I came near I ..........yes.....saw the 4 exhaust pipes on it.......meaning 350 BHP.

The second event:

My civilized wife always calm and relaxed never emotional sat one day behind the wheel, a 316 BMW or something simular parked her car
next to her at the traffic lights.
I glanced and saw a woman behind the wheel making contact with my wife... she looking bit b!tchy,.... if you know what I mean...my wife probably had the same thoughts.
Lights green...and suddenly my wife floors it and we go full speed...no need to say we quickly humiliated the other car.
I looked in amazement to my wife...what the hell.......................the smile on her face was priceless..

Where I live there are plenty of folks wanting to race anything with wheels...

Not sure how to take "most comical"

Do you mean

A) most stupid car to try it

or

B) most annoyed/gutted driver when you win

Under A) I would list the usual saxos, 106s, corsas (and my particular favourite numpty - the corsa vxr)

Under B) I would put a couple of Astra Vxrs (even one with 300bhp up at Crail who didnt know how to get the power down). Also, to my surprise, a guy with a remapped Seat Leon Cupra.

Sometimes I like to let the smaller cars win. It's usually young guys out and about with their gfs and it makes them happy to win. Also, by driving faster I might encourage them to go faster and thats when there's an accident. I only enjoy a bit of fun when I can see the are not too stupid and their car can take some punishment.

PS, echoing what was said earlier, I love Fiat 500 abarths. The look on the guys face when he fins out his supposedly hot hatch isnt that hot is comical

I feel sorry for all you guys racing. As men you should know one of the worst thing anyone can do is laff at your equipment. Don't rise to the bait of these small equiped drivers be the bigger man.

That must have been a tight fit.

It is a rare occasion for me to feel the need to make a point and I wouldn't ever do it if it was unsafe for me or the other one. I'm too old for random showing off.
However, very occasionally, it just has to be done which is why I pointed out my 2 examples in 7 months of ownership of the Picasso and the Fiat 500.
The other 99.9% of the time I am revelling in my smugness!!!!

If they were 4 big German guys I would definitely not race them....no matter what they drive...

But if you mean the Konigsallee not to wide to race...uhhh you are right...my wife went nearly beserk when both cars took off....

Anyway after 4 years driving the GTI  I eased down and nowadays only if the real occasion arise I indulge myself.....

Thats what I thought when I read that too... 4 German adults in a 2 seater convertible.  Must've been sitting on each others lap.

Two 'big' (as in large) German men could look like four men to us smaller folk!
But I read somewhere that the Dutch are the 'tallest' (not biggest) people in Europe .
These Germans must have been really huge even to Dutch eyes!
I wonder what was more alarming: your wife flooring the throttle or the huge Germans in a Z3?
Really funny, but best gradually forgotten!
