Title: Let the buyer beware............
Post by: The Meister on 11 February 2010, 16:40
There is a moral to this story, so please bear with me on it.

I bought a 2009 registered 'VW approved scheme' GTI Mark 6 on 31 December 2009 from a main VW dealer at an excellent discount versus new (3,850 miles only, 5 door, DSG, leather, metallic, 18" monzas).  All in all a very nice, well priced 'nearly new' car, as I didn't want to wait 6 months for a new one.  There were a few minor issues on delivery, but nothing that the dealer wasn't prepared to put right.

Then when I hand washed the car for the first time I noticed that the tailgate was rubbing on the bumper in each corner taking the paint away.  I took it to my local main VW bodyshop and they said it was warranty work as the tailgate hadn't been fitted right, but they couldn't do the work as they were not a VW approved bodyshop warranty repairer

So I took it to an approved repairer who looked under the boot carpet to find not only a badly fitted tailgate, but also an inch of water in the spare wheel well and new welds and paint overspray.  We then looked over the whole car to find residual masking tape unpainted fine lines on most panels, an incorrectly painted roof, rough welds along each roof edge, peeling paint along the rear wheel arch edges and, of course, the leaking rear floor pan which was corroding.

He had discovered that the car had been in a very major accident in its very short life, possibly a roll, with a new boot floor and rear panel incorrectly fitted, new bumper, new roof, panel beaten rear quarter panels and repainted doors, etc.  The job had been done by a cowboy outfit and did not meet VW standards.  All in all, a complete mess and a lemon of a car   Nothing came up on the HPI check. The car now needs major work including an almost complete respray.

So this week I legally rejected the car, which was accepted without a wimper

Anyway, to cut a long story short, the VW main dealer has agreed to swop me into a brand new, unregistered stock showroom car (built in December 2009) for no extra money, which I pick up next week (5 door GTI, black pearl, 18" monzas, leather, manual - my ideal spec).  As such, it qualifies for 15% VAT and pre-VW price rise.  Result!!      :smug:

I have to compliment the main dealer on their brilliant customer service in recognising the problem and responding, awesome in fact, but they should never have retailed the car in the first place, which they accept.  I assume it was bought in by a buyer from the previous 'private' owner and not checked properly.  Now I know why the owner got rid of an otherwise fantastic car so quickly perhaps.

So to all of you out there, the moral is just to be very, very careful when buying second hand, whether under the VW approved scheme or not......please check everything.  Also, that my chosen VW dealer's after sales service has been 100% exemplary in all respects, so well done to them.  And that the VW used car scheme quality guarantee is worth the paper its written on.

I'm now a very happy bunny.

Wow!  There's a cautionary tale and no mistake.

This is the second dodgy dealing example recently from VW... Wonder what Wolfsberg would make of all this?

One of the MKV boys got pulled over in his car the day he bought it (from a VW dealer, BTW!!!) on a motorway because it was stolen!

Glad you got it all sorted :: it'll hopefully be an excellent car for you. :afro:

I was reading that story with baited breath waiting for an horrific ending!

What a result for you, congrats!  Good job you washed it.  Was it driving ok?

Great outcome.
Maybe a heads up with the reg number once you pick up your new car?

I know it can be changed to a private plate but would dealers do this to conceal its true identity?

I've go to ask - did you not look around the car prior to buying it?

+1 I guess you did look in the boot or under the boot carpet before buying then.

New car i do the PDI checks.
Secondhand like this one i go over it with a fine toothcomb.

Glad you had a good outcome.

I had a look over the car, but not with a fine tooth comb, as I has driven 80 miles buy it and just wanted to get home.  Car drives fine.  I certainly didn't think to look under the boot carpet, considering the car's age and from VW approved scheme.

I have a very fine attention to detail, so if I missed stuff others could too.  I'm still driving the car until the swop next week.  I don't feel inclined to disclose the car reg, but PM me if you have any concerns regarding a specific car you may be looking at!!

Fantastic result in the end for me, I'm so pleased.

But it wasn't a new car, was it? Anyway, I was thinking more about the paint issues. When I spend over £20,000 on something I tend to check it out pretty closely. Hell, I even check things over pretty closely when I pay £20 for them

And yes, I look under the boot carpet, and even look underneath at the floor pan, when I buy a car. New or used.

PDI the PDI!
There are always things the dealer misses.

Most cars have damage of some form, I have been trying to find my brother a car for £5K and I can't find one that hasn't been damaged, must have looked over 12-15 cars so far in the past 3 months.

You got a lucky break there that you noticed so quickly and not 6 months down the line as they probably would have denied at it that point saying you had fixed it.

Hmm.. so VW classed this car (and still do.. as they will sell it to someone else) an "approved used car"

Fantastic result... but then again so it should be.  The dealer was probably crapping him/herself as you could have had grounds for a major lawsuit against them for selling something that could have been very dangerous.

Clearly you're very happy now and wouldn't consider going to trading standards.... which cynically speaking is the result the dealer also wanted....

No because they'll have the same problem with the next owner. They'll either punt it off to auction or put it in with the scrappage cars for collection by the breakers yards with all it's ID removed.

Glad of the outcome for you, but i would not be complimenting the dealer. They got found out.
Exactly what are they checking for under the "vw approved scheme" - all these faults would/ should have been picked up.
It sounds to me that the dealer was trying to pull a fast one, and got their fingers burnt. Hence it was being sold at a great price.

I think we are being a bit harsh on the dealer .. yes they made a mistake in taking the car in and then selling it but they could have done no more once it was highlighted to them

If anything this story demonstrates exactly why you should by under the approved scheme (If you are not confident in your own abilities) had it been almost any other garage or private seller the op would be looking pretty miserable now.

Hang on! Exactly how was it approved??? i'm sure someone at vw "should" have given this car a good going over for it to be classed as approved! if this has happened then that person should lose their job!
It's true that the dealer has done a good thing by sorting the guy out with a new car BUT this car should never have been sold in that condition in the first place!
Are you a dealer by any chance?
