Title: Clutch just done...non starter

Im really at the end of my tether with the golf now, its a 2.0 16v GTI, the clutch went on it over two weeks ago so I replaced that, while doing that I noticed a driveshaft was in bits so did that too, stuck it all back together and now it wont start! The battery has run flat so ive been trying to start it by jumping it from my mr2. Ive checked all the connections that I removed while doing the clutch and there all fine. When I turn the key theres a click from the starter as if its trying to engage but no cranking! I replaced the starter motor today with a brand new one and its exactly the same thing. Im really losing patience with it all now...someone please suggest what else i should be checking....

what about trying to bump it.. might be better than trying to jump it?? just a thought like...

i probably should have mentioned that I tried bumping it the other day and it bumped no problem and sits and runs fine once its bumped. its just once i turn it off again i cant get it started  :cry:

what about the coil... they can just 'go' for no reason

maybe a stupid question but would be engine still not crank if the coil was gone? would it not turn over but not fire up?

I checked the main lead onto the dizzy cap against the body of the car and im not getting a spark, recon thats the problem?? again should the starter still not be turning over the crank though??

I checked the coil again and it turns out i am getting a spark so im completely lost now!

I noticed the power wire that goes on the end of the starter had two splits in the insulation and the wire was black underneath so i cut that back until the wire was good again and replaced it with a new wire. but still the same problem...

Someone please help and suggest what i should be checking...im really close to setting it on fire and walking away  :sad:

Kind of a really stupid reply but you said that your battery has run flat but it bumps fine yea? my GF clio was doing the exact same thing, how ever hers was down to 2 things a flat battery & the starter motor, try a new battery? or does your car have an immobiliser that could be stopping this?

Yeah it bumps fine. I just tried my battery from my mr2 in it and the same things happening and that battery is only a few months old  :cry:

The car does have an aftermarket alarm and immobiliser but the it goes off as it should when i press the immobiliser fob in to the slot  :huh:

im losing the plot with this now...new clutch, brakes, tyres....I just want to drive the thing now!

Might seem a little daft but have you checked/cleaned the earth cable to the starter??

Dam beleave me fella i really am feeling your pain, check my topic under yours you will see that im in your pain to mate, the only other thing i could sugesst is theres is something somewhere clearly stopping your car from turning over, and if it isnt your starter motor, battery then is must be something cutting the power before it gets chance to do its job by telling the starter motor to get off its fat arse and start :(

Im gona take off all the earth connections etc tommorow and test them and clean them again...

honestly at breaking point with it

You usually find that after you've spent sh!t loads of money it's something stupid like a dodgy earth. Keep the faith Mate will be worth it in the end. Let me know how you get on.     Cheers      Deano

tell me about it, it'll be something stupid, i already get the feeling that i didnt need a new starter at all so theres £100 gone already  :cry:

this thing will be running if its the last thing i do!!!

Right...probably the stupidest thing ive ever done...i had the wire from the starter to the alternator bolted on but when i was doing the clutch id tucked the wire from the battery to the starter behind the washer bottle  :embarassed: silly boy, so ive connected that back up and the engine is turning over again

but.....it wont start  :angry:

Ive just replaced the coil pack, dizzy cap, rotor arm, plug leads and spark plugs and it still will not start

it sounds like its going to start but it just wont fire  :angry: what should i be checking now?? im getting fed up throwing money at this car

someone help please

Good that you've got it cranking.  Now...

(1)  Is it sparking?  Check that the cam sensor is plugged in. (on the dizzy)

(2)  Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to the "run" position?
