a lucky escape for me from an under bonnet fire as i traded my car in at a dealer for my golf r (still waiting). I phoned the dealer up few days ago only to find out that the gti had cought fire under the bonnet whilst sitting in the forecourt, he did not know much about this but he did say that it was an electrical fault that trigerd this dont know the state of the car now but he did say it was scrap, allso there is another gti in the local recovery depo that has had the same problem and there is only rear tailgate left thats un touched, thought this may be helpful to you guys just in case you get cought out, or get it cheked at your next service id hate to have it go up in my garage at home

I had the same thing, however was not so lucky as it happened just 1 hour after buying it!
You can see pics of the aftermath at

I had an independant inspection report carried out that was non-conclusive, all we know is that it started directly behind the driver's dash so likely that it was something to do with coil but no-one really knows for sure.....I keep meaning to buy a portable fire extinguisher just in case the same thing was to happen with my replacement!
Hope this doesn't put you totally off another VW though...
However, you were indeed very lucky  !!

Behind the dash and something to do with the coil??? I don't get that?
Very strange that 2 cars have gone up within a month - both at dealers! What are they cleaning the under-bonnet areas with these days? Super unleaded!!
-
Coils (modern electronic equivalent) are directly attached to the spark plug of each cylinder. It is common for them to fail, not heard of them catching fire.
-
Ive heard of a few of these catching fire randomly.
Really doesnt inspire confidence with mine sitting on the drive :undecided:

Don't be so negative, there are tens of thousands not catching fire randomly, so that should fill you with confidence

I am now filled, thanks ;)

Ive heard of a few of these catching fire randomly.
Maybe they're made by Sony Batteries Inc and quality tested by Toyota Japan :-)

Who'd have thought that one of my requirements when I was picking a GTI wouldn't be DSG, leather or similar....
"I'd like one that doesn't catch fire, please".
I'm not laughing at the chaps who have had fires, BTW.
-
It's only the -55 versions that catch fire I think.
(Just like the OP's)
