Title: How easy is it to retrofit an rns 510

Considering buying an rns 510 off ebay with gps reciever, disc, code etc wondering how easy it is to install spoke to one of the technicians in work he said quite easy providing you have all the bits, where is the easiest place to install the antenna?

There is a small shelf behind the head unit that the antenna can sit on.
5 / 10 minute job if its anything like fitting a RCD510.

Why the doubt about his technical knowledge?
I have met plenty of car sales guys who have no technical knowledge. They're in sales and like wearing a suit not overalls, they deal with shifting metal not fixing it.
So the sales guy goes and asks a techie who is not necessarily an enthusiast if a sat nav radio can be fitted. Techie shrugs shoulders as he's mostly used to following warranty guideline fault finding processes off a PC and makes a best assumption.

As for the ease of fitting, I've got an RNS on its way to me now, and if there are likely to be any problems in fitting it they'll happen to me as that's my luck, so I'll let you know in due course.  :smiley:  That's assuming it doesn't happen to get destroyed in the post first..... :grin:

I'll refer you back to Aidy's guide from a while ago.  Its sooooo simple to fit.
You'll likely need VagCom coding - but I'm sure if you ask one of your techs nicely they'll sort that out for you.

Your biggest concern will be finding a genuine one on ebay thats actually as new - far too many stories of scratched units, sellers not sending etc etc.

Ask yourself where these are coming from - if you had RNS from the factory would you be changing it for anythign else ?  Written off cars - could well be but the number on ebay seems higher than the number of right offs to my eyes   :undecided:

I dread to think where these units are sourced from!
I got mine via Morty on here.

Fitted it this morning, easy peasy. Broke a couple of clips on the fascia surround but it all clips back okay. May need a few of the features to be enabled via VCDS but Morty kindly BAP enabled it before sending it out so the air-con etc all appears on screen properly.
Will have a proper play with it later in the week.  :smiley:

See Mortygt140 before you take a chance and buy one from ebay.

Top bloke, enabled the sat nav directions etc on my MFD after asking my main dealer to do the same but they did'nt have a clue how to do it(kept going on about stripping the dash down and connecting a wire from the MFD to the RNS510 (eh! what's that all about!).
