HI guys`n gals,
As mentioned above, a gearbox from a mk2 8v gti has been fitted to a mk1 1.8 clipper and has left us with a problem when selecting either 1st gear and reverse gear. In order to select 1st gear, the gear stick has to be pushed down first, and then into gear, this is obviously not right. This is the same proceeder as putting the car into reverse gear and is proving very difficult to drive..
Can someone shed any light on this issue.
Thanks for any help, Theo

i think your gear linkage is not adjusted correctly hence having to push down to select first there is a guide on mk1golf.org on how to adjust
secondly you would be also better of in fitting a gear linkage repair kit while your at it.
when i had a recon gearbox fitted i was still getting 2nd gear crunch, 1 new linkage kit later and i have an as new gear shift and as smooth as factory fresh
btw pushing down to select reverse is correct

make sure you get the kit with the link arms included iirc its about 18-25 quid and not the one with just the bushes

did you take the MK2 linkage off the gearbox and swap on the MK1 bit? the L shaped bit with 2 ball ends on
