Cleaning my pride & joy the other day when I noticed a few areas of rust. One or two rust spots on the drivers door and some around the plastic bung on the lower nearside part of the windscreen. Non of this looks too serious but I would like to sort it. Does anyone recommend a diy fix (and if so the tools etc) or is it a garage job?? I've seen these Chips away vans around, anyone used them?

take of whatever trim is in the way then get a wire brush or something similar and get back to bare metal then put some kurust treater on it, available from diy stores and chavfords, i did a couple of bits on the bottom of my doors with black paint stuff and it doesnt notice unless you look really hard. then if you can get at it from then inside do the same, then smother it in that wax waterproof stuff wyns make, i forget what its called, and you will be laughing!

Thanks, I think I got that, I'll get down to Halfords this w/end. BTW do you know what the bung I mentioned is for, and can it be removed??
-
its for the wipers on a left hand drive car I think.
-
yeah its vw being lazy! it is for left hand drive and earlier golfs had the wipers on the other way round so when they changed them they just drilled a new hole! it can be removed but you'll have weld over the hole or fibreglass and fille rit or something
-
Get the spare wiper hole done ASAP, it'll soon go right through and spread under the windscreen seal like mine :(

Is rust on the tailgate, near the grb handle, and around the number plate lights a common problem? I have rust here (only place on car) and have seen it on a few others?
-
Yea I think so, probably cos of the self-tapping screws that hold everything on damage the paint. Plus the screws themselves like to rust to buggery!
Got this on mine too!

I've not got what looks like two t i t s on the back now ;D ::)

yeah mk2 tailgates rusteasiyl because the amount of spray and crap that gets thrown up in the wet sits behind the number plate and the handle and rust the screws like rubjohhny said. then it just eats away with out you noticing.
