VW diesels are at their best on the motorway, as the engine is turning at low revs compared with a petrol engine and the sound insulation is good. Nice and refined plus the low-end torque makes for easy acceleration when changing lanes without having to drop two gears. I've driven over 100,000 miles in various VW group TDI's and I'd recommend them.

And I'm someone who hates diesels

Great for long motorway trips - good consumption and quieter than the Mk5 GTi. Less road noise, but occasional wind noise from mirrors/door seals. Would recommend cruise if you're planning a lot of motorway driving.

Its concerning about the wind noise on the motorway , I think that would drive me mad TBH!!

In fairness, wind noise is only occasional and far less that my previous Mk5 GTi/Edition 30. It's not particularly distracting, just pops up now and again. And the RCD510 and Dynaudio masks it...!

Intresting you had an ED30 and going to a GTD? You saying the GTD is better car?

Your thoughts and views on the GTD170, performance figures , and what's it like to drive on M-Way?

I've had the GTD since end of November and have covered 2000 miles so far.

Done a couple of hundred miles on the motorway, very quiet in 6th gear.  At 90mph you can still hold a normal conversation without having to raise your voice over road or engine noise.  I've not noticed any wind noise at all when on the motorway.

Even though its a diesel it still really really pulls, no problems with any overtaking.

Most of my driving is town at the weekend and a 10 mile journey to and from work along a dual carriageway where I go a long at 80/90.  After I'd done 1000 miles I started being a bit more harsh on the pedals, even so I'm still getting over 400 miles from the tank.

I'm not getting into that! GTi and Ed30 were both great cars - particularly the Ed30. However, this time around I had to take a long, hard look at what I was paying for fuel, and with around 24,000 miles per annum I needed to save some money. So, weighing up everything the GTD seemed to be a good mix of performance, economy and comfort. No regrets so far...

Yes i agree with you about not getting into the differance's between the  2cars. Its thristy the ED30 if your doing lots of miles!!

hahahahahahahaha each comment you make gives me a smile

Its a great car both that and the gti I sometimes say to myself I would love a gti but I would miss the torque and mpg I can get out of my gtd. Answer get both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have driven one you will know how quiet it is and how well it goes, I dont think anyone who has got one will have a bad word to say about either the gtd or gti.

Totally agree with the above posts. I recently traded in my mk5 170 DSG GT for a mrk6 DSG GTI and I have to admit I do miss the mpg I used to get from the diesel.

I'm chuffed to bits with the new GTI and the performance especially as I have always wanted to own one. However I think the answer is they are both fantastic cars.

If they did a slightyl hotter GTD, like a GTDR with around 210BHP plus and a bit more styling tweeks, I would deffo get one for my Mrs. At the moment, we are going from ED30 to mk6 GTI. We went from GTID (mk4) to the ED30, the mk4 Diesel PD150 was a great car, but very grey if you know what I mean.

The only thing that puts me off the current GTD is the 'greyness' of it, It just looks like everythig is in black and white compared to the GTI.

Still if you get a GTD i'm sure you'll be more than happy.

Way things are going, next time around I'm really keen on the next gen Focus RS if the rumoured hybrid set up specs are real, as we all spend far to much on fuel and tax and the moment.

Well dont own a vw golf got the fr seat tdi 170. I find it a really good engine. Pulls damm well and on motorway its a breeze. Not owned a high end petrol so cant really compare.

But big thumbs up for me. A little remap down the is in order i think and then ubber power lol.

Your thoughts and views on the GTD170, performance figures , and what's it like to drive on M-Way?
Thought I'd just contribute a set of performance figures taken from Volkswagen Driver magazine:

               Mk6 GTI   Mk6 GTD   Mk6 GTI   Mk5 GTI   Mk5 ED30
               Manual   Manual      DSG         Manual      Manual
0-60         6.3         7.5            6.5            6.0         5.6
0-80         9.6         12.6         10.1            10.7      9.4
30-50 3rd   3.2         3.1            2.4            3.0         2.9
50-70 4th   4.3         4.7            --            4.1         3.7

overall mpg   35.2      46.7         32.5         28.6         27.8
As you can see ingear figures are not too bad. These are what we use on a daily basis really, unless your a traffic light grand prix Paxo driver.

You'll love it. I've found in the past that diesels seem to take longer than petrol to 'loosen up' I'm at 7500 miles and the engine is really responsive now. So what colour and spec did you go for?

Yes i have to agree i did fall in love with it today , that engine note sounded like an R32 very addictive!! Loads of torque feels like you are flying but looked at the speedo was doing 70 didint even realise it . Sport mode and i was getting 30 mpg and i was moveing too. The ed30 18 to MPG so massive inprovment and just so smooth & refined no tractor noise ether. The exust has been tuned sounds much better than my ED30, very impressed its come on heaps & bounds the engine!! I hated diesil engine's but not any more got to be the way forward !! Twin turbo would nice though we live in hope??? Once its run in will go for bluefin and get upto 200 psi , Then it will blow VW kev away hahahaha  Ps not sure about the ACC though didnt really feel that much differance with if i'm honest?? Good to hear your thoughts on ACC?

Just noticed your sig - good spec too. Dynaudio is a good choice, although you'll need to keep the volume down to hear the exhaust note
Edit: Funny you should say that - I really miss the golf ball gearstick too. Someone must do it as an option.
Title: Re: Why the GTD170?
Post by: Snoopy on 06 February 2010, 12:52
I did wonder if the mk5 and mk6 if the centre concel cutout for the gearstick panel was the same size and shape. If it is we can probably fit the golfball one from the Ed30.
Title: Re: Why the GTD170?
Post by: AlanH on 06 February 2010, 12:55
It would be interesting to know. I find the GTD gearstick a little on the 'skinny' side compared to the Ed30. The golf ball felt just right.

I stole the Golf Ball one from my ED30 when I was up at the garage removing my stereo / roadpilot / belongings after it'd been written off.
Its quite easy to get into, but you need to snap a metal clip off to get it off.  I just used a pair of bolt cutters - any marks you make are inside the leather gaitor, and invisible once its fitted.  Re-fitting a new metal clip isn't vital as its really stiff to get off without it anyway.

Once I decided I was getting a DSG, I put it in the classified section here.  I got £100 for it if I remember correctly.

I was surprised the scrap dealer who bought the car from me never mentioned it!
Title: GTD faster than GTI?
Post by: RickS on 08 February 2010, 13:21
Why does VWKev say the GTD is faster than the GTi when the figures don't support that? GTD 0-62 8.1secs, top speed 138; GTi 0-62 6.9secs top speed 148.

How does that make the GTD faster?

Enough is enough is enough!!! Now who was the singer???
Maybe GTD owners would know!
