Got a Mk II 8v.
Rarely starts first time, sometimes takes 2 or 3 goes to start, sometimes takes 15 or 20 goes to get it to start.
Once it starts it runs fine. Doesnt seem to make any difference if engine is hot or cold or if weather is hot or cold.
So far I have replaced
Spark plugs
Rotor arm
Dizzy cap
Ignition switch
Ignition barrel
HT leads look ok, but havent replaced them.
Still having same problem with starting
What next?

fuel filter? if your getting good spark, try fuel.....................?
-
Definately check as Joe says for problems with fueling ...
Also check the ignition amp / hall sender and fuel pump relay - all 3 can cause problems, but I wouldn't have thought with starting alone ... same with the fuelling too, but u have to rule them out!
Is the static ignition timing correct ?? When she's not firing does she turn over fast or slowly ??
When you're trying to start her, get someone to check the timing as she's turning over with a strobe to see if the timings jumping about or missing a beat ... hope this gets u started ;D

Have ya taken a plug out to see if you have a good spark at the plugs?
In fact take em all out and reconnect to the leads. See if they spark in rotation and just as strong.
If not its the coil.
If after all that its not the coil coz spark is fine then its on the fuel side.

ive got a few ignition amps/distributors and a few others stuff lying about if you need some mate. feel free to PM Blue :)
If it runs perfect after starting then im sure thats spark related?
How good is your fuel econemy?

dont forget mk2's are quite old now just could be age??

Someone has recommended trying to start it when it is dark, to see if there are any visible sparks indicating worn HT leads.
Worth trying I suppose?
-
Yup - definately !

If yer HT leads are that bad ya can feel the discharge by running yer fingers along them.
Nice tingling sensation!
