Firstly, big hello to everyone
Was having a converstion in the pub with some mates and we seemed to have very large differences in opinion on the yearly depreciation of the mk5 gti, I understand the 1st 3yrs are the worst but whats the yearly loss after that. Does it then change to a fixed figure of say £500 a year or do they still have lots to lose, whats the general view here?

I bought my GTI 06 (56) back in june last year from Auction and havnt lost any money on it at all
According to the AutoTrader its still worth the same money as I paid for it
It all depends on how much mileage you do and the condition the car is

In my opinion you cant put a yearly figure on depreciation, impossible.
its all down to what time of year you sell it, and to whom and you sell, also the spec, mileage, service history, colour, availability of similar cars in your area etc etc.
also the Mk5 obviously isnt the current model, so thats a whole other argument.

+1
as well as a host of other factors such as supply and demand of new affecting used - time after release etc. As the Mk6 has only just come out the used Mk6 GTi market is small so prices of the Mk5 will hold - ish.
I've lost c£9k in 3 years of ownership with my GTi simply due to depreciation but that's the price you pay for a new(<6 months old anyway) car with the VW warranty and minimal replacement of wear and tear items (discs pads etc) - not that they would have cost £9k to fix! but you also get a "new" car so depends on how you much that is worth to you I guess.

You know what flicks me off - I've heard it's only really in Britain / Ireland we worry about mileage.
On the continent, esp Germany, they barely look at it, they're far more interested in proper maintenance and condition.
And no wise cracks about them being interested in kilometerage not mileage

My 06 was given a predicted value of £11,000 at its next birthday (April) as a trade in.
3dr man met 6cd 17" 40k
However, interesting times ahead for the motor trade. They are predicting the worst year in 2 decades. (FT recovery watch WE 7/2/10)

When I took my ED30 for its first service, the sales guy told me I'd actually get MORE then what I paid for it if I sold it then! lol
No doubt it will have depreciated by then though - not sure how much by, but Im hoping the ED30 will keep some value better then the standard GTI.

ED 30 is the daddy of the lot(inc MK VI) so I'm told.
-
lowdown - funny enough the Service guy said the same thing to me when I picked my ED30 yesterday. Said he'd PDI'd the new R20 and that the ED30 was a better car - LOL
BTW - Saw an 08 plate ED30 in the garage, don't know the miles but it was on for 19,995
