I put a thread in the garage section the other day about my fan belt squealing but I've had time to look at it today and it's not the fan belt. Today I tried to tighten the fan belt but the squealing persisted so I then loosened it again and took the fan belt off to check it was ok, I then moved the car a few feet backwards without the fan belt on and the queal was still there, I've narrowed it down to one of the wheels that the fan belt goes round and of the three it's the one that is nearest the bulk head and it's below the timing belt I think. Anyone any ideas what is causing this noise and if I'm doing any damage by driving round, any help is appreciated. Thanks. :)

Well the one nearest the bulkhead will be the crankshaft pulley (Alternator, top front and water pump, bottom front). You say its squealing even with the belt off! That is odd - and possibly very worrying - Stop driving it, seriously!
I don't think it is that pulley. My money is on your timing belt tensioner which is just above that pulley, obviously under the timing belt cover. Stop driving (I can't emphasize that enough) and check it out mate because if it is that (and I'm almost certain it is) it can break up and cause pistons to meet valves - ask Gaz, he knows all about that with his 20V :o
It is recommended that the tensioner is replaced when you replace the timing belt, too many engines have been written off because of the damn tensioner breaking up and not the timing belt itself >:(

Guess you're now going for a new timing belt, tensioner and judging by your other post, new fan belt too. Good luck, better to be safe than sorry - will be cheaper in the long run ;)

Timing belt was changed in January. What a p1sser? :( Another thing Rich, the squealing is not there when i first start up the engine, it starts after about five minutes, any ideas on that too ?

Did they only change the belt and not the tensioner? Be suprised if the tensioner would have failed that quickly.

I don't remember them saying so and I know the garage that looks after my car so I get the jobs done without paying VAT so I've no bill to check what was replaced, maybe a lesson to be learnt there. :(

Update on this problem, I took it into the garage today and it was the timing belt tensioner that was making the noise, thanks to Rich for another expert diagnosis, much appreciated. :) Had this changed and they also changed the timing belt, cost me a reasonable ?112 all in parts and labour. For the record, my timing belt was changed in January this year but the tensioner wasn't, my tip of the day is to get this changed whenever changing the timing belt as the tensioner wheel was only ?25 from VW stealership and when changing the timing belt all the labour has already been done. Hope this helps someone. :)

Glad you got it fixed before that tensioner went bang - worked out cheaper in the long run, for sure.

Thanks Rich, the bearings in the tensioner wheel must have been as dry as a nuns crutch ;D
