Title: HELP- Replacing rear axle/sub frame bushers knackered
Post by: walchy01 on 02 February 2010, 19:10
Hi all

My Gti has failed it's mot on the rear sub frame rubber bushes both sides,, i have been told that this is a real git of a job, someone has advised me to replace the whole axle in order to make the job a little easier to whoever offers to do the job at the right money and obviously i can treat/spray the axle prior to taking it for fitting.

Has anyone had this job done?

What sort of money will it cost?

How long a job is it?

Thanks for you help in advance, much appreciated.

Its not that bad a job if you are mechanically minded, butthe bushes are a mear to get out, job takes a couple of hours+ depending on how much of a mear it wants to be, extraset of hands helps for refitting aswell.
Where are you?

The standard bushes are suppost to be a pig to do, however you can get the aftermarket type that come in two halfs.

Sounds good, when you think what two calipers cost, you still have to fit though.
Are your calipers knackered, fitted mk4 items to mine.

The bushes are tricky enough to remove, and if you want to reinstate the VW type and not Poly bushes you will require some tools.

For removal, I always burst out the middle rubber part of the bush and than use a hack saw to cut out the bush (remove blade from hacksaw and put through hole and reconnect to hacksaw, upside down and cut away).  Be careful not to cut in too much into the axle.  The blade usually sticks when you have cut through the bush.  Beat out with hammer.

Also note the position of the old bush prior to removing, as if you are installing the VW type it will have to go back the same.  Polys dont matter.

You will need a hydrualic porta power to push in the bushes in location if using VW ones, polys are easy to install.

Once reinstated, make sure your lower the car, prior to tightening the main bush bolt.
