Is it easy to code in the cruise control on a mk6 GTI if i simply buy the arm and fit it myself.
(I trust my work more than a dealer to retro fit it)
-
I'd like to know this too - as a stalk is only about £50. I can't remember where I saw it for sale though...
-
No one :undecided:

Just been looking on VW accessories website and it's only £59 for the mk6, i'm sure i'd seen it on there for £159 fitted.

Found it for £150, fitted.
Have not ordered it on my GTi.
Never wanted to use 'Cruise Control' even on long journeys.
Call me old fashioned and a control freak to boot!

^^^Your old fashioned and a control freak!!!!!
Was that on the vw website mate?

It's a bit fiddly to remove the old stalk and for coding you need to activate it in controller for the steering wheel and engine

It'a a pretty useful thing to have these days for travelling through SPECS camera zones and along roads that are inundated with GATSO's
Saves you having to look down at your speedo all the time
Had mine retro-fitted at the Stealers for £150 all in.... I'm sure it will be the same for the Mk 6
-
I had it retro-fitted on my MK5 GTI.
£49 for the stalk off eBay, 40 minutes of careful fiddling by my VW tech mate, job done.
You'll need it coding by either a dealer VAS 5052 or VAGCOM.

in 01 - Engine. Coding -> Long coding helper -> byte 06 - click the box to enable CC
The steering wheel coding is even easier - hover over the text box and it'll pop up a list of instructions like these http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/VW_Golf_%281K%29_Steering_Wheel#Coding

I've ordered a VagCom, so I'm up for having a go at this now. When you say its a bit fiddly, how fiddly are we talking?! Do you change over the whole stalk, or is it a case of fitting the control switches into the blank plate in the existing stalk? Does it involve removing the steering column or anything like that?
Can anyone tell me if the MK6 stalk is the same as the MK5 one? Since I'm going to have a VagCom, £50-60 for the stalk makes it a nice extra - but I probably wouldn't pay £150 for it as I rarely do motorway driving.
-
^^^ It requires the whole stalk to be replaced, which needs the steering wheel and cowling to be removed.

Steering wheel removed
Perhaps I'll give it a miss. I would have easily removed the plastic cowling, but I'm not up for taking off the steering wheel. A
I'd end up with the airbag in my face
-
^^^ It's a lot easier than it sounds, the airbag is held on with two clips, just turn the wheel 90 degrees and get a flat screw driver and a small mirror (after disconnecting the battery) and push the clip over the brackets
Then the wheel is held in place with one multi point spline bolt (M12 IIRC).

And how easy is the plastic cowling to come off? I'd just be dubious that my airbag wouldn't work properly after I'd dicked about with it!! If there was a how to guide with piccy's, I might feel a bit more confident.
-
Not sure on the Mk6 cowling, with the Mk5 there was one screw under then it just unclipped on the sides, I will double check on my Mk6 and let you know

Nice one... cheers! I'll have a look tonight and see if I can find a 'how to' guide. Someone must have done one somewhere!!
-
I've found a MK4 fitting guide which looks awful complicated...
I'll keep looking for a MK6 one. I wonder if Elsa tells you how to do it?
-
Can anyone confirm whether the MK6 uses the same Cruise Control stalk as the MK5?
I can buy an MK5 one no problem, but can't find anything listed as MK6.
Since its technically a MK5.5 - I would have thought it would be the same thing
-
Any idea why the cruise control listed in the accessories brochure is £162.50 (I'm assuming fitted) yet on the VW car configurator it is a £225 factory fit option?

Its always the same - its cheaper to retrofit than as a factory fit... don't know why though!
