Hi All
First of all id like to congratulate you on such a good forum... The section of reccomended garages is a brilliant idea!!!!
Im looking to replace my two front tyres on my Mk5 GTI... I hit a pot hole the other day and one has a massive bulge out of the side
My question is what is the best tyre to buy for the golf?
Currently I have two continental sport 2's on it which since owning have been ok but i think the wheels spin a little to easily.
Any advice would be greatly welcomed

OMG , you started something now on here???? Wellcome to the forum, there are so many argumnets about this issue on here!! At the moment i have GYF1's on the front and they useless as a winter tyre IMO, so swapped them round to the back for the Dulop's which have been much better, but not as good F1's in the rain!! I found GYf1's dont last very long on my ED30, so me personaly I would go for the PS2's or PS3 Michlin all the way!! Hope this helps , but they are pricy but worth it in the long run.
:wink: I find the Goodyear's overrated on this forum???? :evil:

Vredestein Assym tyres are bar far the Best Value for money. Payed £91 each, Better the Ps2's in some Customer Reviews. Perform the same as the Michelin's for a third less in cost.
I have fitted Vredesteins on mine, and think they are superb, quiet and great traction.

Been mentioned before that the Goodyear F1s arnt good in the Cold but ive never found them that bad TBH, They are still the best tyre out there IMO, I also am a fan of what you already have, the Conti Contact Sports. I had them on my M3 and they were Brill, not sure how they work on the GTI though. The potenzas are not bad either, although they needed replaced when i bought the car so i only done 200 miles on them, The PS 2s again are good but a bit pricey IMO so that rules them out for me.
The F1s won EVO Magazines tyre of the year, for all weather performance, So they have been proven ! :smiley:

In August I upgraded my Monzas to some BBS LMs and got a set of new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics on it from a company called R-Tec over in St.Albans so not exactly local, but they did me a good deal on wheels and tyres so was worth the drive.

Oh YES !
Do NOT buy run flats if your an enthusiastic driver and enjoy driving.
The opinion of one BMW driver
I am driving a 2006 BMW 325 with the standard OEM Bridgestone run flat tires. These are simply the worst tires I have ever experienced (I must add that I have had many sets of Bridgestone Turanzas and Potenzas that performed extremely well on other cars). The run flat tires provide a rough jostling ride, do not corner well, and are incredibly noisy on rough pavement. I have only had the car a few weeks but I am going to switch out these tires with something else that will provide ride and handling that is acceptable. Carrying a compact spare and a jack is a small inconvenience compared to riding on this poor excuse for a tire. There is a long way to go on this technology and BMW should not have ruined an otherwise great car with these tires

^^^^ They cost more, they're loud as f00k and they ruin the ride.
I ran Bridgestone RE 050 Potenza run flats (17") on my last car for a year and yes, they lasted well, gripped well, but I refer you to my last sentence!

So i have narrowed it down to the Goodyear F1 Assy's and Vredesteins which are around the same price on Camskill

Will there be an difference between the load index of 91 & 94?
And whether I should go for W or Y speed rating?

You need a load rating of at least 91 so either should be fine.
In terms of speed rating you must fit tyres that are rated above the top speed of the car, which I think is 148mph for the MK5 GTI.

You're better off running on just the rims.
You get a better ride, road holding and its a lot quieter. And cheaper! :)

Don't discount the GSD3s, been running them for 6 years now. Perfect tyre IMO, although fuel economy has dipped on the Golf after changing them from the God awful Dunlop Sport Maxx

The OE tyres were conti 2's but have moved on to conti sport contact 3's. I think they're a much better tyre in terms of grip. Wear rate is similar and a pair of 18" costs me c£230 fitted.

had conti 3s on my st mondeo. same size as the golf thought they were good all round tyres and i got them fitted for £430 for 4 ! :grin: will replace the dunlop on my ed 30 with these when they need replacing.

I think if they are running on the pavement the noise might just not be only from the tyres and the 'roughness' may also go some way to explaining the red splashes up the side of the car! :wink:
I tend to prefer keeping the wheels on the road most of the time.

That's written by an american - they often refer to the road surface as pavement.

I guessed so but it didn't stop me having a chuckle at the mental picture of a BMW ploughing down screaming pedestrians whilst the driver complained about the chatter from the tyres :grin:

Well yeah - BMW drivers are usually oblivious to other road users through their arrogance :rolleyes:
Anyway, I am looking at 4x of the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta based on the recommendation of you guys, what sizes do I need for the 18" monza2 wheels?

we have vredestein's all round on our mk5. had them before on our BMW, was impressed.
i had a full set of uniroyal rainsport 2's on my octy vrs - they were a good tyre too.
similar price.

I asked same question b4 xmas and the consensus was to go for Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas. Unfortunately my tyre place didn't do them, so I went for Continentel Sport Contact 3's. I am very happy with the Conti's, but they were quite expensive @ £107.00 each.

To be honest thats a good price for the Conti 3's, I have the same tyres and they came in at £120 a piece, and I think that is lower than their usual price.

That is the wrong size quoted, it should be 225/40/18.
running 45 profile on an 18" you might have rubbing issues on inside of arches etc.
If you have 17" wheels the size would be 225/45/17

Finally managed to find a place that actually did the Vriedsteins.. £440 for all 4 corners :cry: Cannot believe how much more quieter and smoother they seem though. It originally came with dunlop sportmax and they have been sh*te since day one... chirping all over the place. With these it feels as though I can put the power down without the ESP going crazy :lipsrsealed: (once they were bedded in on my private runway, of course)

yep i agree
i had full set of fealken's on the vrs and it was rubbish
changed to rainsport 2's and car was awesome.
sadly i traded it in
and bought a mk5 GTi........wish i'd bought the golf years ago
