Title: Leccy windows
Post by: JezGTI on 29 October 2004, 10:20
Considering upgrading my manual front windows for electric type.  I'm not the most mechanically minded Golf driver but have a fair amount of common sense.  Has anyone done this and is it easy, are there any instructions floating about on the net??  Cheers.

The hardest part is actually finding the regulators and loom, once you have that its dead easy.  All you need is an ignition live and earth then you're sorted!

Simply a case of unbolting old stuff and bolting in the new kit, but make sure you get the right type as there are 2 door types, the early one with the mirror half way down the door and the late type with the 1 piece glass.

3 & 5 front door regulators are the same, but the rear door regulators are different to the fronts.

How do I tell which version is which?  Have you any experience with aftermarket kits?  Thanks again..

expect to pay around ?25 for each window regulator

switches & loom are easy to find. its the regulators that aint, start searching the length of the country!!

look for people who are breaking golfs.

you want to go to GSF matey. they do a complete front electric window kit.
you get complete mechanisms for each door. looms, switchs and a mounting plate to fit switches to center consol. plus a half decent set of instructions on how to wire them up. all of that for ?125. thats the same price as just one motor mech from a main dealer.
i have this kit fitted in my car and i think its good value for money plus good quality.

I'm a bit of a purist with my golf, so I'd want the switches etc to look original.  Do these aftermarket kits look like the original gear??

Oooooh, they look nice.  I might get a set of them myself.

What about the manual winders?  I mean, are they taken off and have a cap to cover the hole? or do you have to get new cards?

Most MK2s with leccy windows just have a plastic cap in the hole, can get it cheap from GPC and VW.

In fact the kit comes with them anyway I believe!

It didn't say, i dont think.... Does it not matter that for a three door, you only need two mechnisms though? Surely the kit would be different??
