Title: Manual or DSG??
Post by: KIRKS1989 on 31 January 2010, 20:16
Hi people,

After the car being seized on thursday night i have decided that i what to change the car.

They have 2 cars available to choose from.  Same colour (Silver) similar spec but one is a manual the other is DSG.

Having not driven the DSG yet what would people recommend??

Thanks

Ben

There are many other threads in this forum arguing the toss over this one, but I took the plunge with DSG a year ago and cannot imagine ever having a manual gearbox again.

Ben

i had a quick test drive in a DSG. but i went for a manual.two reasons one because i like a manual you feel more in control somehow.and two because i work as an agricultural engineer and most modern tractors have electronically controlled multi clutched gearboxes.and the problems we get are horrendous i personally think the technology needs a few years to be as reliable as a manual.

These tractors are probably running much higher torque than the GTI though. As Hurdy has shown, the GTI's DSG box can handle even heavily modded torque outputs quite well

If you do mainly motorways and some bendy country roads go for a manual.

If you do stop start city (London) traffic go for DSG.

I went for DSG, after having manual cars for 10 years and haven't regretted it. (I do the latter London roads)

I'm hunting for a S4 just now, but will only accept a manual box

Golf manual box - the only type of box for us mechanical sorts

Take an extended test drive over all types of routes in both cars and you'll make your own mind up! :afro:

I've been a die hard manual fan all my life, but will find it hard to go back now.

It took me a good 3 months to adapt and I use manual mode with the paddles 99% of the time - I only use D when its icy or when I'm stuck in traffic.

Those who say you lose control of the vehicle haven't driven one for long enough. Ok, it won't let you change from 5th to 2nd like you could in a manual car, but that's a good thing surely???

DSG all the way. Looove it. Smooth, quick gear changes. Lazy when you need it, aggressive when you want it. Flappies add to the driving experience imho fwiw.

Manual - you are in the gear you want to be in all of the time.

^^^^ I'll say it again. Never mind all these opinions! Drive both before committing!

Paddles, manual mode, custom mapping, etc

Yeah, I know. Re-programming the 'box does sort it out. Why they couldn't have set it up that way in the first place though, I don't know.

This has been done a thousand times and the only right answer is for you to go and drive both and see what you like best.

For me its manual, just couldn't get my head around the auto side of the DSG and didnt find it anywhere near as involving as the manual, but other people swear by it.

I know lots of people that have had manuals and bought a DSG, they never go back for another manual.
I dont know of one person that has had DSG (takes a week or so to get used tofor most people) and not liked it.
I have a DSG in one car and manual in the girlfriends, we fight over who drives the DSG.

I love my DSG except for one thing, when flooring it on standing start, there seems to be a slight pause and jolt before the power is unleashed, anyone else get this or got any driving tips?

Could be a faulty mechatronic unit??

First car with a DSG - miles ahead of the 1970s technology used in most other automatics to this day. Must admit I do feel I have to justify why I bought an auto tho.
