he'll tell you that you've either got a split on one of your boost hoses or a pipe has popped out of its fixings

turbo charger?   when that lets go you normally get blue / white smoke and also most of the contents of your engine oil will be gone  :undecided:

Did you check the oil level?

Did it bring up any fault codes?

The sysmtoms sound liek the problem I had with a problem with the pipe that connects to the left hand side of the EGR.
Mate that part is a fat pipe on the left hand side of the engine it goes upto the top left on the engine and goes into a metal thing which is the EGR, check that pipe all the way down and see if you can find any leaks.

I would be surprised if it was the turbo.

Sounds like a common pipe split or a pipe that has blowen off. The black smoke is unburnt diesel.

If your turbo has gone you would be seeing blue or white smoke and low oil levels.

Also you said he ran a diagnostic check and came to the conclusion that it was the turbo? There is no fault code for a blowen turbo that I know exists. Could be wrong?

As said sounds like a intercooler pipe has come off, if one did you may get a code which would relate to the turbo.
did they check the car or just scan it for codes?

Not wishing to thread hijack but been doing a bit a of research for my old man who has a 04 Octavia Tdi 1.9 110bhp
(mk4 golf tdi in a czech suit) with similar probs but with billowy blue smoke on start up, loss of power if pushed beyond 3k rpm.

Believe it's engine code BXE(?)

Garage replaced x2 valves to turbo( at 40.00 a toss plus labour) But now are saying that turbo is knackered and would like 1100.00 to replace it with a new one

My old man has asked me if I could dig out some info for him as I may have mentioned something about that for that price surely he could get a bigger turbo/ remap and get a few more ponies out of the old girl

Mk2 Mk3 golfs are more my thing so wondered if any of you lovely people could shed any light or point me in the right direction?

Cheers in advance

Matsu - good luck with your repair hope it's done the trick!
Neo - I dont know who some mechanics think they are, but after charging you for two valves and then declaring their work as useless and a waste of your money, are they going to refund what youve paid so far? If not i personally believe in a good stern smash to the face, because thats a cheek!

missed Neo's reply first time around but the tell-tale sign was the blue smoke = turbo on its way out.

i can only assume that the two valves they replaced might have been the N75 and EGR solenoids; no idea why they would though

Blue smoke means the engine is burning oil so how they thought changing two solenoids would help I have no idea!

Cheers for the info,

My old man has gone back to the garage where he bought it ( brand new) and explained how unhappy a bunnie he is. Apparently the guy who was dealing with him has been sacked and working his notice so perhaps not really giving it his best effort.

Anyways, this has filtered back to the gaffer of the place who has promised to look into personally so fingers crossed that they'll get it sorted for him. Seems bit daft to treat him poorly as he's had x3 brand new Skodas off them and as he pointed out to me that he's past the point of rolling around under cars of a Saturday afternoon
