Title: Is it wrong?....
Post by: DubFan on 28 October 2004, 18:52
Ok, so I found this little car on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=9873&item=2496223491&rd=1

So, is it wrong to modify such a rare car as a Rallye and get rid of the lovely G60 engine in favour of a 1.8Turbo lump?

Personally I'd prefer to keep a Rallye original. I admit that it's a nice car and with 290bhp it'll move very quickly, but...
if you wanted 1.8T 4WD, then you could go find a Mk2 Syncro and put a 1.8T lump in it.

Thoughts...

nah i think thats fine, admittedly rallyes are rare but they are also crying out for some serious power! i say good on him, not too keen on the paint job but other than that i think its awesome. just think of the tuning potential with an engine like that!

must be running some serious boost from that little K04 to get that kind of power... cant be a reliable setup surely  :-\

My thoughts if its his car then he can do what he likes  :)

If he's got the cash to put into it then surely it can only make it better !

Didn't The Golf do a feature on this car about a year ago? looks familiar.

I say why not. The G60 engine is a fine lump but the ound for pound you will get more for your money tuning the 1.8t. Nothing that can't be un done.  :)

hhhmmmmm, tough question for me, I think that everything except the engine should be left as standard and even then I think you should do what you can with the original engine first and then when you blow it up stick another lump in  ;D. Just my opinion.  :)

Alot of people are doin this conversion nowadays, mainly because the G60/ rallye does have alot of the right tools to make the conversion easier.
so to some it makes sense, also you can get a good 2nd hand price for the G60 engine, everyones a winner :D

yes and no .. I like the way he's transformed his car to the way he wanted it but it's also nice to retain some of the features that make the car different, ie original components.

dnno, hes running the same BHP as richgit and hes had no problems, However he does have a switch that turns his car from 300BHP down to 150  :-\ but from what i understand 300BHP should be fine.

it'll make that kind of power alright, and the engine is well up to the task... but the turbo just isn't (not for very long anyway) ask anyone who's ever removed a little borg warner kkk turbo from a remapped engine... full of hairline cracks ! absolutely crapped myself when i saw my old one. You want a reliable 300bhp+ from a 1.8T .. you go hybrid/roller bearing .. dammit there i go giving myself ideas again  >:(

Definitely a tricky one, yeah they are quite rare but then how boring would it be if everyone kept them standard?

I spoke to the guy that owns this

http://www.golfgti.co.uk/pageimages/vwaction04/40.jpg

for quite a while at the last Action. He is keeping it absolutely standard and is real concours spec. I think it's great that there are people that do that but it's not for me. Why have 160bhp when you can reliably have well over 200! Small 15" wheels in those big arches?!

G60 lumps are getting a bit long in the tooth now i think, and if it is a high miler then it is just as practical to get an engine conversion

one thing i wouldnt do is change the colour. id have kept it the std colour
