Title: Miss fire/ funny stutter
Post by: Max on 28 October 2004, 10:41
Hi,

I have a problem with my mk3 Gti 2.0 8 valve: When I'm on the motorway (and pretty much anywhere else when I can get over 50 mph) and I'm on part throttle (not quite on the over-run, not accelerating, just cruising really) the car seems to stutter. All of a sudden for a split second it's as if the engine cuts out and you get a jolt through the car and then it's fine again. It doesn't seem to do it when accelerating or braking and it doesn't do it when cold. The gauges don't die and the stutter is really quick, over in a flash. It doesn't feel like a fuel problem i.e. no loss in power (apart from during the split second), no missing or popping - but obviously I can't be sure.

I've replaced the plugs and coil and fairly recently the water temp sensor, before I spend more cash on the leads, cap and rotor arms does anybody have and ideas as to what could be causing the problem?

All suggestions gratefully received!!

Mate you got the Mk 3 disease!

Its the relays! Either the fuel pump or ECU relays or both.

Loads of threads around about this problem.

Thanks guys, I've done a quick searck on German & Swedish's site and they only list a fuel pump relay - can you recommend a source for the ECU relay?

Stupid question now, I don't suppose you know what numbers they are? It'll make it a lot easier for me to swap them!!

 ;)

That's very kind of you thanks but my local dealer has one in stock for 8 quid so as I'm fed up with the stutter I'll go for that one.

Many thanks again though  :) :)

Mine started 3 weeks ago with the same problem. Took it to my local Vdub specialist and ran a diagnostic but found nothing. Changed the plugs, dizzy and crank impulse sensor and still it gets the jitters! Got the fuel pump and ecu relays today. I'll let you know how i got on. Spent ?290 so far on pi55ing myself off! I read on another link that taking the ecu fuse out may help as it apparently resets the ecu?! Might be worth a try???

Ive replaced all you have apart from the Engine speed sensor.. thats ?116 from VW so gonna see if i can find one at a scrappy.. not a clue where or what it looks like so if anyone can send me a pic or guide me it would be appreciated.

Ive also heard it might be a timing issue.. Between us im sure we can crack this....

Cheers

Dave

ARGHHHHH!!!!

Its doing it again! I change the relays and all seemed well. It lasted 260 miles untill the gitters came back. I thought it may have been a one off cos it lasted 130 odd miles untill the next time, whereas before it was messin up every 40 mile or so...

Not sure what to try next. Any ideas? I think ive tried all cheap options. Is it time to part-ex it at a garage  before i waste any more money on it.

HELP!!!  :undecided:

Maybe try going to VW for the diagnostic check.
I've tried specialists for this service before, sometimes they are a bit 'iffy'.

Im at my wits end with mine. I have diagnostics a plenty and replaced everything discussed before apart from the crank sensor but in addition the lambda sensor.

Last guy that looked at it told me to run it through with injector cleaner which I have done for 500 miles, bugger all difference. HE is suggesting now I should have the injectors serviced..

What does anyone think as to whether this is the right route. Im so sick of it im considering trading in the car.

Ive just blown another ?20 trying some 10k boost a few people on here suggested, the car runs a little smoother but the juddering is still there, i might cry soon im all out of ideas.

I have owned VW's for the last 13 years and this MK3 GTI is by far the worst piece of cr*p ive owned. Even when it was going ok it was boring and slow. Im thinking of trying a diffewrent Marque.
