Title: Looking at a GTI
Post by: ChrisbGTI72 on 29 January 2010, 21:28
....after months of searching I'm finally looking at a GTI tomorrow that ticks all of my major wish list boxes!

I've read a few threads of what to look out for when buying a used GTI, but I just wondered if there is any major differences between earlier versions of the MK5 over later versions?

I'm looking at a 2005 55reg so I realise it's one of the earlier examples. It's a DSG which was one of my main priorities, were there any differences to the gearbox back in 2005? It's covered 42,000 miles so I know it shouldn't need the gearbox oil changing for another 18,000.

It sounds cheap considering it's at a dealer at £12,000 so I need to look for reasons why!!

If it's not right I still have time on my side to walk away and wait for another car to come up, but I must admit that I am getting bored of driving my wife's Lupo now

Any thoughts, buying tips and advice would be grateful.

Many of the earlier models appear to have less rattles, mine is a 54 plate and is 100% rattle free. Also blue tinted glass was standard along with a hidden radio antenna, altrhough i'm not sure when these where phased out. Thhe ashtray cover is also brushed aluminium on the earlier ones but black on the later models.

The main change was the engine code AXX on early models, BWA? on later models. Essentially the same engine but with a few tweaks to lower emission levels.

I've not heard of any changes to the DSG box but not sure on that one as mines a manual.

It hasn't got leather.

In regard to the 55 Reg: I must be honest and say I have never seen a car with such badly kerbed alloys!! The salesman had warned me that the car hadn't been prepped, but he had also failed to tell me it was a shed!! It would have needed at least £1000 spending on it just to get rid of all the scuffs and scratches. How can people treat cars in this way?

My search goes on  :undecided:

I personally think 12k is too dear.

For me, the DSG is a bit of an over priced luxury. Nothing can beat the performance and feel of a manual gearbox. Also, the leather seats may look good and add a bit of luxury to the whole package - but the standard Racaro seat's a fabulous and think they hold you in place allot better.

People pay daft money for options in the second hand market - many of them needless - but I suppose if someone's willing to pay the extra...

erh a dsg car can    :smug:...

DSG gearbox's should be serviced at 40 k and not 60k my friend. It should of been done.

12k will buy you a very good spec car around that Plate. Look for plenty VW history and get the Reg plate number, check on a vw's dealership's computer to see what has or hasnt in this case been looked at.

I would pay 12k for a MINT example, and normally if its priced like that as a private sale, normally means its been well cared for and not neglected.

This was one of the cheapest DSG's with leather on Autotrader I've seen for that age/mileage. To be honest I haven't seen much cheaper even with cloth for that age either

Leather is important as we are expecting a baby and I'm thinking of the practical side of things (like wiping up baby puke.......god for bid in a car of mine )

I have been looking for some time now and used prices are very high at the moment every where! I think I will get a cheaper and potentially a better kept car in the private sales as anyone should be embarrassed to sell a car like I saw yesterday!

The more I think about that car the more I think what a crap dealership for even showing it to me and more importantly letting me drive 85 miles to get there!

I'm hoping March will bring a fresh supply of used cars as people upgrade to new plated Mk6's.

Chris,

My 07 plate is down for sale at a dealers in Croydon for just over £15k. When we spoke in November I said it may be worth a look. And too be fair he's got some good movement on the price, as I know what he paid as PX ! Its at a garage called South Croydon Motor Centre

Another Croydonian ? ?

FYI early models also came with a slightly better speaker setup. I think it was a 10 speaker setup rather than the 8 which came in the ones later on.
