Hey guys, replaced my thermostat on my 8v gti today and damn it was a right pain in the ass, but its done and all is well. Still had problems bleeding it, spent an hour checking/topping up etc, squeezing hoses, once it got to 90 and the thermostat opened it wouldnt go above 90, so i couldn't check if the fan worked! and ideas for a quick way to check it out? I know from experience its ok to drive around in winter with no fan, but i wanna get it sorted now lol

It still may not be bled fully, also my gauge never goes above 90 either but my fan does cut in and out fairly regular in traffic.

finished the exact same last night.mine doesnt go above 90 now either,so as above ,couldnt check fan either.might change the temp sender just incase.any ideas???

i did take mine for about a 25 mile drive this evening, the heaters started working fine then by the end they were cold again lol so iv got back home and removed the filler cap to sit over night, hopefully (fingers crossed) it will bleed itself and i can top it up in the morning lol I was planning on replacing the temp sender anyway in a couple of weeks, but wanted to check the fans just incase it didnt need it. Runs much better now its not cold all the time!

not too bad to do really,once you take into account having to take the power steering pump off a second time cos you forgot the rubber ring,which then u go out and buy one from euro' at £1.15 a pop,then you realise u have a box full of these at home :angry: make sure you have axle stands or ramps as you work underneath anyway.

well, i managed to do mine all from above, couldnt be bothered to jack it up. From the top u need to remove the alternator, or just pull it out the way, then undo and pull the air con pump out the way, undo and remove the tensioner housing, then u can remove the waterpump/thermostat housing. (this is on the 8v gti) dont know about the others. Once i had put it all back toggether i realised that one of the coolant hoses wasnt on right :( luckily, i managed to work in the smallest space in the world to get it back on, which i was thankful for lol. Bleeding isnt the greatest thing to do either, so u may wanna look at one of the guides first.

if you go from underneath all you need to do is unbolt the pas pump, dead easy. undo the entire pump and bracket assembly, dont bother taking pump ff bracket or antyrhing./ bracket is held on with 2 bolts from underneath, need to loosen tensioning 15mm bolt, then remove 13mm bolt driver side (one with big toothed wheel) and another 13mm bolt passenger side, the one that goes thru a slotted bracket. then whole thing drops off, place it to 1 side with hoses still attached, then take of stat housing and replace.

nope lol. Its been bluddy freezing, i'm waiting for my power steering pump from my mate. he's taking his time tho... anyway once i get that (which will sort the squeeky pump) then i will do the thermostat the same time :wink:
Or have a good go at doing it :laugh:

Well, after bleeding again for 2 hours this evening, i finally have hot air through my blowers! and temp gauge stays at 90! However i still havent seen my fan cut in (or heard)? anyone have any links of how to diagnose any fan problems? also my oil temperature is way high, runs between 110-120 most of the time! could this be because the fan isnt working? really need to get that sorted 2! any suggestions?

My oil temp is usually around 95-100 so i would leave it a couple of days to settle down. As for the fan check your fuses first then go from there.
