1983 Golf GTI. I have a sound underneath in engine compartment. The sound sounds like its coming from underneath near pedal on drivers side. Something is loose. No skweeking on metal to metal. I jacked car up and looked at suspension, engine mounts. Shook and touched supension. Nothing is loose. The sounds comes when sitting still and push in clutch to start car. Sound also comes when drive slow or normal on neighborhood bumpy streets. Also sound comes when downshifting.

engine/gearbox mount?

cool. thanks. jacked it up today and looked underneath again. yea it was the engine gearbox mount. me and a buddy are going fix tomorrow. is there a reason why the bolts are loose? does this happen on a gti or just cause it has some age on it?

Rats like to nibble on the little rubber bit, they then fart which is really corrosive and that degrades the mount and makes it loose... fact

You'll probably find that the mount started to collapse a bit with age, which made the engine/box move which then in turn loosened the bolts. That said, the bolts could have been loose anyway which would lead to the engine mount failing.

check the other mounts though pal, if one is f**ked the others might not be too far behind.
and if you change one and the others are f**ked, it wont be long before you are changing the new one again.

just took off engine mount bracket that is attached to mounts and then underneath car. it was held up by 2 bolts that are attached to bottom of car. one bolt is shreaded off and the other the treads are screwed (no pun) so are these bolts part of the car? meaning welded to car and or studs? me and my car smart buddy can't figure out. thanks
