I knew it would need fair bit, and it did!
Failed on:
A big hole on the o/s/r foot well (and i mean BIG)
Nearside and off side front sill
2x rear brake pipes
Rear discs and pads
N/S front wishbone ball joint
Was advised
Rear beam bushes... HA i think i will give these a miss
corrosion to inner door shut
So its going to need a whole lot of welding, but hey, theres nothing there i havn't done before on a MK3
I Hope to get it ready for early summer, needs lots of other bits too that arnt related to MOT, As the dash needs to come out for the heater matrix i think i will strip out all of the interior carpet, will allow better access for welding, Will steem clean anything i can while its out too.
I will be doing a progress thread i think so will have lots of before and afters

look forward to seeing your progress m8,
think your at my stage 3 months ago, lol!!
at least you can do it all yurself!!! :D

Surely for what mk3 Golfs cost it's gotta be more cost effective to get rid of this one and get another, it sounds trashed?

+1 does not make sense to me even if it was cheap.

Fair enough, but how do you no your getting a better one unless you no exactly what to look out for.
I dont think its that bad to be honest. and because your doing the work yourself its a bonus.
If the engine is in good nick then your onto a winner.

I respect that but not all mk3's are this bad.

I wouldn't break it.. I have being looking at golfs for the last few weeks or so and I recon 70-80% needed welding!
(there were some only fit for scrap but still on sale for good money! inc 1 where the front jacking points were shockingly crumbling and it has 11 months mot on it!)
Keep us up to date with the "project" Mr R

I agree some are better than others. but it is possible to restore one really bad one to one really good one quite cheaply if done yourself, which i hope he does. otherwise its another mk3 in a scrappy. :undecided:
Mine is the 20% of the good ones then coz mines solid. but it is a late one

You didn't go to kwik fit did you? took mine in today, rear wheel bearings, rear shocks leaking, both sills need welding, rear brake pipes need replacing, head light alignment out, wipers need changing, exhaust mounting not supporting. rung a mate who normally does my MOT's, laughed his socks off, "never went to kwik fit did you, 1001 things wrong was there, let me guess, brakes, suspension, wipers and on older cars rust????? Got a retest somewhere else in the morning!!!!
-
Forgot to mention, replaced rear shocks week before last, new disks, calipers pads all round and rear wheels bearings 6 months ago, all brake pipes replaced 18 months ago and wipers!!! Figure that out?
-
i dont see the problem in fixing it...
at least if your doing it yourself you know where your upto and its done propery :D

I got this car as a project, I do everything my self! engine is spot on!
I have been looking for ages and to get one with tax and mot etc.. was £700+ but they were awfull condition to be honnest, so i would drive it then end up scrapping it once mot is out as i wont have the time/money to do it, At least now i know what i need and there is no rush for the car to be done plus i have the money to do it now.
Oh, by the way the MOT was done where i work (honda dealership) by a fellow technician so he told me exactly what it was and was fair about it. Nothing dodgy

All sounds good to me.
