Title: Ignition help
Post by: airmech on 25 January 2010, 21:34
Hi,had a battery go flat last week, sorted that put new battery on all lights come up on dash but wont turn engine over, there is a clifford alarm fitted but dont think this has any bearing as engine will bump start.Although once running engine fine but ignition key returns to the off position and engine cuts out,the ignition barrel looks like it has dropped in its housing, went to my local vw thief and they quoted me £107 plus vat for an  ignition barrel, needless to say I nearly had a baby.Any ideas guys and girls?

Why not try a fitting a push button to start it. I'm gonna fit one on mine when I get a chance because my ignition switch is playing up aswell

Well, replaced the ignition barrel, and now we have tempremental starting, when you let go of the key engine cuts out,so next step is to remove the steering wheel I guess then slide the column up and change the switch which is hidden inside the ignition barrel housing, thanks Guesswho for the e-bay tip on a new ignition barrel from wunderpartz, superfast next day delivery, new german part which looks exactly the same as the genuine one which was removed.will post the outcome of this frustrating saga, luv the car but losing patience now.

wonderpartz buy all there stock from the same supplier as I use.....and the parts are febi brand so the quality is good (they also do the switch too)

but they don't work with 95 onward cars as you need the chip in the key. airmech do you have the original key as it could be worth placing this somewhere near the ignition and then trying to start the car (hopefully the car will read the key and turn off the immmobiliser)

got steering wheel off and disconnected steering column after marking positions for both, how do I get the immobiliser ring off without damaging it,it`s hard wired and there isn`t enuff cable to allow me to remove column to gain access to the switch.
