Hi,
I've got a Mk3 16v (P-plate, 90K miles).
I'm consistently averaging 32mpg (motorway + urban) - is this good/bad/awful? I dont hoon it around particularly badly :-)
TIA

Sounds fine to me.
Mine used to average 29-30mpg and i often did hoon it around particularly badly.
I doubt there are many 16v GTI owners averaging much more than that.
-
My 8v averages around 32-36mpg over a month (about 1500-2000 miles) and that is mainly dual carriageway and a lot of stop start town driving.....and then some weekend hooning around!!. On the daily drive (70 mile round trip) the MFA reads between 30 and 36 mpg.

Thnx guys!
-
My 8v used to give 34 overall, upto 40 on 60 mph runs, I love 'em to bits, I'm looking for my 4th
-
Think yerself lucky mate, mine averages 27/28 mpg
With a very heavy right foot! ;D
-
mine averages about 32mpg general driving, and i got 38mpg out of it when i went to bug jam in the summer, was sticking to 70mph but still not bad for a 2litre 150bhp car
-
just put a k and n induction kit on mine, so hopefully it will not make much difference to the fuel economy, i was getting around 300miles out of it. i got a 200mile journey on the weekend we shall see how it goes
fuel gauges have they got a mind of there own, cos i have only ever been able to get 45litres in it and it is suppose to be a 55litre tank, i have even gone past the red once and onto the white and still only manage 45litres. anyone had or got the same problem.
cheers

My fuel guage is completely nuts - it goes down a lot faster when its towards the right and seems to stay at 1/2 way for a while and then jumps down to the red. Also, sometimes I look down and notice the needle has suddenly jumped right down and then slowly starts to go back up!

to be completely honest with you all, fuel ecomony is not what i would expect to be a prime concern for a GTi owner, as it is a performance car, not a ecomonical car.
I have a mk3, as you know which my girlfriend uses to go to work in as she does a lot less miles than me, so i use the more ecomical 1.4 astra.
And the mpg i get out of my mk3 16v is more than exectable for a car of its stature!

Only see more than 30mpg out of my valver if I'm on a long journey. Normally it sits about 26-27 on a regular journey. I did get it down to 17 on the way home from work once. Damn that 3000rpm at the top is addictive :D

mr wotto
its not our prime concern, we just wanna know wat to expect out of a tank thats all, from all other gti 16v onwers, and it can be an ecomonical car if you want it too be.
-
like to hear some vr6 owners on this... ;)
cos i want to see what i think i'm getting myself into.. ;D
-
I once drove to manchester and back (440 miles) and averaged 31.9 mpg, and that was just driving normally not with economy in mind.
My normal driving is on a & b roads and in towns and i average 26mpg.
-
Thanks again peeps - my post was prompted by MFA readings vs. weird fuel tank indicator behaviour...
A/way - guess my size 12 right foot (my left is a 12 too) is not as heavy as some others...;-)
Peace

I know its not your prime concern, I was just making my opinion that GTi's are not strictly ecomonical, but can be depending on your driving style and conditions.

I average between 28-38 on my 8v GTI, usually about 33 over a tankful of varied driving. My CL TDi averages a whopping 61mpg over a tank without even trying - its truly amazing and as quick as the GTi.

Ive got a L plate VR6 and i get around the town about 27 mpg which i check at a certain point on the way home from work ( dunno why ) but on the motorway i get 32.
I do like to put my foot down by the way as theres plenty of traffic lights on they way home ;)
