Title: oops, dont like the sound of that!
Post by: Rmachines on 24 January 2010, 23:03
I have just noticed when im on the brakes lightly there is a slight hissing noise..  obviously this is the servo,  is that a leaking servo?  brakes work spot on under all loads, slamming on, holding on for time.  If it needs replacing...  Is that a right pig on the valver?

Could be a split vacum pipe.

+1

Check the non return valve aswell on the servo. because if this allows flow both ways then your servo will pop and you got no brakes

Happened to me in a Vauxhall Nova SR I had (1st car by the way) lol - 3 - 4 servos later and i eventually found the problem myself, because garages didnt have a clue why they were popping..

Good luck.

cool nice one chaps!  i thought it was the servo its self as its only when im on the brakes, but i will investigate further

no worries. in my nova i took the non return valve off and put my finger inside the servo and it was damp, i smelt my finger afterwards and it smelt of petrol. which indicated the non return valve connecting to the servo and the exhaust was goosed. causing the fumes and condensation to get into the servo causing it to pop. (p.s.) each time a new servo was put on it took around 2-3 months for it to eventually pop. so if it is the non return valve goosed on yours, i'd seriously think about changing the servo as it could still pop due to it having already gotten in contact to fumes etc...

hope this helps.

just to correct myself, the non return valve from the brake servo routes to the inlet manifold. not to the exhaust as i previously said.
(that was how it was on my old nova)

Hope you get it sorted asap anyway.

whats all this about a non return valve? after my conversion i was missing the inlet manifold to servo pipe so just i put in a decent silcone pipe so my brakes worked. i dont want my servo to pop!!!

There is a vac pipe that has a non return valve built into it and the pipe slots into the brake servo, the pipe (on my 8v gti) runs to the inlet manifold. This allows only flow from the servo to the inlet manifold. therefore does not let any flow from the inlet manifold to the servo. If the non return valve is knackered, then your going to get foreign substances flowing to the servo causing the servo to get damp and eventually pop causing your brakes to fail badly.

NOTE - wether this is the case on the golf i'm not 100% sure but on my previous cars they have all had non return valves, but only failed on my first car (Vauxhall Nova) - BUT (on the nova the pipe ran from the servo to the exhaust downpipe - which when the non return valve failed it allowed exhaust fumes into the servo causing it to pop)

Anyone want to correct me wether the golf mk3 works how i stated....

Cheers.

What you could do if take the pipe out of the servo and with your finger feel the inside of the servo for any wettness....
This should be dry and if it is and doesnt smell of any fumes etc... then your fine as the golf may not work how the nova did. i.e. doesnt need a non return valve,  if you know what i mean... but let someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I not looked into mine yet but i do know it has a one way valve on it It has two little pipes coming off with with little green caps over it, i remember that much

I agree.

And if lazylunatic hasnt got the correct one way valve (non return valve) like he said 'used a silicone pipe'... your bound to be getting crap into your servo which to me is very dangerous.

put it this way its not good when you brake hard and your servo pops and your pedal goes absolutely solid and starts hissing air. which then stalls your car.

Lazylunatic - Look further into this if i was you mate.

Aswell as your brakes do not work!!

Have your handbrake at hand, if that works aswell
