Title: Performance air filters
Post by: herbie911 on 24 January 2010, 22:26
Got a week off in two weeks and planning to change engine oil as my GTI had just passed 2500miles this weekend with no problem at all.

Wonder which air filter should I go for  BMC (444/01) vs K+N (33-2865) vs Volkswagen Racing?

Reading other forum, they talk about oil from these performance air filter can cause faulty MAP sensors :undecided:, anyone here had used these filters longterm??

After reading flc1962 post and having a good chat with Superchips, I am going to order the Bluefin. They also do remap for the VWR team!

Thanks for any reply!

likewise, been thinking about this as a minor upgrade:

i don't want to go the whole hog and remap the car yet due to warranty/ insurance concerns, but this seems like a cheap way to get a little extra torque for under 100 quid and i presume this won't affect my warranty nor need i tell the insurer?!?!

As you live in London, get in touch with The Russelll Performance Centre.
They are agents for Bluefin, K&N Filters, etc. Very helpful and professional.

good subtle mod the VWR panel filter lasts forever just needs a wipe once a year

Done the oil change and added the BMC air filter. Total cost<£80. Didn't go for the Superchip Bluefin as Porsche had just released a performance kit for my other car. Can't afford to do both at the same time without upsetting the Missus on Valentine day!

Save yourself a few quid and just clean the OEM one once in a while. It'll flow just as well as an aftemarket panel filter so long as it's kept nice and clean.
The only gains you'll notice on the road will come with a specific intake and a remap that 's been designed to work with it. In my humble opinion of course.

Oh, and a non OEM filter will bugger your warranty just as much as a re-map will. I'd rather spend £400-£500 on 40-50 bhp extra to bugger my warranty than £30-£50 for 2bhp and still bugger my warranty  In my humble opinion of course.

I still got my original air filter which I will put back for my next service. Air filter will not cause me any headache!

Unfortunately, there is no such things as a remap that is untraceable! They always know how many times the ECU being flashed even if you put the car back to standard via Bluefin! Why do you think on their website they mention one should tell your insurance company after the ECU being remap?

I will still go for Bluefin if I am going for a remap. The fact they do one for VW racing give me some confidence!

Agree with the previous comments....panel filters are a waste of cash, if you intend doing any decent modding you're best with the likes of a CAI & if you're not modding you'll just not see any worthwhile difference in performance from a panel filter - it might sound a bit noisier though if that's your thing

I fitted a pipercross panel filter to mine a couple of days after the remap,
remap was still settling in so i do not know if there is any difference over standard, should suck more air in over standard paper filter thou  :undecided:

fitted a carbonio system to my old mk5 and got better throttle response and a nice subtle induction roar,
