Hi All
Potentially my new GTI may turn up around the time I need to do a 350+ miles round trip. I remember there was a thread on here about running cars in but I'm not sure if it made reference to the pros and cons of a long journey early in a car's life.
Does anyone have an opinion as to whether it's OK for me to take it on an early long trip or does it not really matter?
Thanks

Heres what Teutonic_Tamer recommended a while back, and I followed for running in my ED30.
Its hard to do though
0 - 300 miles up to 2,500 rpm / 1/4 throttle
300 - 600 miles up to 3,500 rpm / 1/2 throttle
600 - 800 miles up to 4,500 rpm / 1/2 throttle
800 - 1,000 miles up to 5,500 rpm / 3/4 throttle
1,000 - 1,200 miles up to 6,500 rpm / 3/4 throttle
1,200 - onwards max rpm / full throttle

Nice one- thanks mate. Reckon you're right about being hard to do though

keep it simple
Just vary the revs...over a long journey early on in engine life I.e. Don't just use cruise control!
Not too high and not too low For 1000 miles should do it.

Take some A roads as well as motorway during the run in period, that'll keep the revs varied.
Don't get too hung up on it, you've got 3 years of warranty remaining

First 2000miles no more than 4000rpm/half throttle. Do engine oil+filter change. One can then fully enjoy with full throttle or above 4000rpm when the engine temp is right.
This advice was passed on to me from my dad when I got my first new car more than a decade ago.

Ok whats 2500rpm in 6th? As i have a ~350mile motorway trip on the way home after picking it up  Thats going to be one odd trip. If they would just let me pick it up at the port it would be so much easier

Ah, you'll have to let us know if you caved in and gave it some welly on the way home  I'm due a trip upto Yorkshire and reckon I'll be making that a few days into ownership

The owners manual states (for the first 1000 miles)
1. Maximum 75% of top speed
2. Avoid full-throttle accelerations
I had a similar trip when I picked mine up and I took the backroads and highways home. Now almost 4000 miles later I haven´t noticed much oil consumption etc. I have not followed any strict running in scheme other than the one stated in the OM and the thing about varying the revs. But really, the latter I don´t think matters. If it was that important the manual should state something about it...after all VW built the car and should know their product.
Anyway, break-in methods have been debated to death here and on other forums so whatever makes most sense to you is the regime I would follow (and did) :)

Only other thing I'd add is not to let it labour at low revs - i.e. pulling away in top from 10MPH
If you've got 350 miles to do, I'd try to do at least half of it on some A-roads - its a lot less boring than trying to vary the speed on a motorway, although it will obviously take a bit longer
