Title: GTI - ESP likes to have its say ?
Post by: simonkit on 22 January 2010, 20:53

I'm just getting used to the GTI after 3 weeks of ownership & have only just had chance to give it a good blast following the dodgy weather. One thing I have noticed is that if you accelerate quickly in 2nd gear mainly the ESP likes to give you a bit of a gentle reminder on the dash, I guess this is pretty normal - to be fair it probably needs to as it can't half shift in 2nd !!

Yeah if its damp and expecially on an incline its quite keen to light up the tyres.

If you have dreadful summer tyres on like the Goodyear F1's you will get this for most of a British year.
I really hate my F1's, as soon as the thermometer drops below 6C they just give up.  Press the throttle and the front end bangs like a jackhammer.

Don't be tempted to switch it off in this weather (damp & greasy). The ESP will cut the power the instant traction is lost, you on the other hand will take a second longer in which time the momentum of the wheels will spin for a further second after that, and a couple of seconds at 70 mph without steering is an eternity!

 Thanks Guys...

I have the Michelin Pilot Sport tyres on, I guess these are "factory fit" as the cars only done 7000 miles from new. It seems tyre choice is even more important with the GTI ?

The wife has a 57 plate Suzuki Swift Sport with Goodyear F1s and they work well on it, although dire in snow like most other low profile tyre.
