Excellent review. Thanks for taking the time to write it. You write well. I am looking forward to comparing notes with you when I drive one. I agree with you about the Blue Graphite. This must be the worst possible colour for the R. Rising Blue or United Grey are so much better. (Racing Green is available from German dealers for €1,600 and I have to say I'm tempted to see if I can get it for mine.)

Car magazine described the GTI as the 911 of hot hatches. I think this is a brilliant description. No doubt that this is an amazingly capable car. For a lot of people, the grin factor a car provides comes feeling the rear end slip and catching it before you oversteer. It is difficult if not dangerous to really experience the best a good rear driver can offer on UK roads, but something like the R has a different grin factor. It is the sheer pace you can achieve, getting from A to B in complete safety at breakneck speeds. I had one of the first VR6s to come into the UK and it was amazing the number of bigger and more expensive cars it showed up. I am in no doubt that the Golf R is the same.  AWD with a FWD bias always gives you such confidence.

As I said in another post, I am itching to see what time the R goes round the 'Ring in. If it can do it in under 8 minutes 20 seconds, then all objections to the price disappear. In the meantime, the only grounds for slating this beast is cost.

Nice review and thanks for taking the time to add the photos. Makes all the difference.
In that colour it really is the Q car.
Good summary too.

Well done mate! Very interesting reading.

Are you still happy you've got one on order now that you've seen it in the flesh and driven it?

Oh yes. Absolutely.

I was hoping the test drive would make the wait easier. But, if anything, it's made it worse.

I would agree with evo magazine - it's a 4.5/5 star car. :nerd:

it does make you realise how expensive it is when see it in the flesh and drive it. What sort of pcp was they offering you? Off the top of my head they offered me on £31500 R £9450 deposit, 35 payments of £420 and future value/final value of 12.5k.

P.s ive never brought a car on pcp so no idea if it was any good but it seemed a bit expensive to me.

Similar to you. I would expect a GMFV after 3 years of at least 50% of purchase price on a car like that. Merc can do it on most their models. And they'll give you discount too.

It all sounds good and exactly what I'm after.  Something I can drive back and forth to work in... but have some fun at the weekend or if some chav pulls up next to me at the lights!

I found the gear change in the MK6 GTI very vague compared to my MK5... almost like it was flapping about a bit!
My dealer will have one for me next week to test drive - a 3 door DSG - so it will be more like my order.  I'm looking forward to trying something fast with DSG as they only had a GTD for me to test it in (the GTD was still pretty quick though!)

Thanks for the write up

You can get an Evo 330 sst for less than the Golf R.
Neither car floats my boat, the Golf R in this weeks Autoexpress test comes out as worse than the standard GTI and the Evo is just too fast.

I almost posted on this yesterday. I have been getting my figures in from my finance broker. I tend to have a couple of cars a year myself, plus buy the cars for my company, so end up doing a number of finance deals a year. . You will be very pushed to get 50% gmfv nowadays.  My Porsche that I bough 6 months ago at about 47%. I asked for figures on the Golf R, Scirocco, GTI and S3 yesterday.

What became clear is that some underwritters have yet to get to grips with the R. The GTI was given 12.7k after 3 years (£27.5k), the R 11.5k (32.5k). The Scirocco was similar to the R. The S3 13.5k (30.5k). All cars DSG and 10kmpa.

What I would really expect with the R is : £14,250 RV. If I put 9.5k down on a 31.5k car I would expect monthly payments to be: £350

VW finance tends to be very conservative on RV's.

Just but the Magazine "Car" (Spain), it has a 3 pages Review and they give 5/5 stars!. They are a little bit disappointed with the DSG saying that it does what ever it wants, not what you want to do, unless you put it in the manual mode. With the automatic mode - "D"- the car always tries to start in 2nd gear to safe Gas, this makes it a little bit slow.  I do really think that this is really strange after what I have been reading everywhere about the DSG, maybe it is a problem from that unit. Apart from all that, they say is the best golf ever. A lot faster than the R32 MKV, Stick to the road and very comfortable. It´s funny what they say.. For those who will say that it is a lot of money for a Golf compare to a Focus RS, just find a Ford, sit down, check the interior and you will find out how they saved all that money you are not spending. Next month they´ll do another review but in Spain without snow, and rain (it was done Germany). Oh and as the say at the end.. Finally there is a Golf R that puts Volkswagen in the place it should be, fixing what the others R32 did before, promising things they never did. With the new Golf R we found the perfect Golf, a GTI... with very BIGGER BALLS.

^^^^

That sounds very similar to the EVO review (in fact the same except for the stars).

DSG in D mode is always going to be like that so it's hardly a big deal. D is for Dawdling around town and relaxing in IMHO

The only way to drive the car seriously is in "M" mode.  Afterall D and S mode cannot see any bends & corners ahead, only the driver can see those and choose the appropriate gear with M mode.

Great post Silver!!

Thats sounds just like the kind of car i am after

Horrific PCP figures though. I paid about 15% of that deposit amount and pay 40% less than that monthly figure for my GTI. Doing the maths.. its alot to pay for a few stick on bits and 4wd even though I really want one :undecided:

i predict that in 3 years the R will be worth 17k+

Nah - just VW being stupidly conservative.

They were the same with the Mk5 R32 - the brand new one (DBP 5 door with DSG, Leather) I bought in November 2008 they offered a GMFV after 3 years of £7K. Well, as you probably know, a car like that is easily worth £15K.

Remember they tested this car in the snow!!!!!. Not a good write up by the journo's, very misleading tbh.

My guess would be £16k max. All finance companies will need a buffer so £14.5k will be the max I think they will go for.

^^^yes agree thats 14.5k thats what they would pay you if you was px ing but buying one from Vw 17k+ easily. They sell 3 year old gti at 14-17k. Some price 4 and 5 year cars at 13-14k thats about 70% of original price robbin barstools. Possibly pick up a R 16k private sale 40k miles cloth, fairly basic spec in 3 years. Unless they do a mk5 r32 job  and just cut price dramatically.

You also have newer and newer cars putting out less and less co2. The R is not that low compared to others and it depends what goverment is in power how much this may effect cars in the future.

Much as some other members in here may complain this sort of review on new cars by it's members is one of the things that make this site great. Please put it back up and ignore some of the more vocal village idiots that reside in our little community.
