tonight called at my local shop to get some cash, pulled up in front of the window so thought I'd use it as an opportunity to check my front lights, what I noticed that I haven't noticed before is that when sidelights are on the dip beam is also on but only dimly lit? Is this normal? I have never known of a vw to do this before?? I know older fords use to,
have I got a fault somewhere??
Car is a '96 P 8v GTi

Normal on GTIs/VRs and GLs.
Possibly SEs too.
-
I think theres a relay or summin u can take out to stop that.
Not 100% though

Hack off the yellow resistor, with HIDs it's as annoying as f**k.
-
with HIDs
:lipsrsealed:
There is indeed a yellow resistor near the drivers wing.

You could have a bad earth on your sidelights causing it to earth through your headlights.

It might make more sense to be VWs Dip-Dim resistor working 100% correctly.
-
What's a dip-dim resistor?
-
Makes dipped beam come on dimly with sidelights, called Dayglo.
-
Mine don't do that.
-
Is yours a GTI?
-
Yea an 8v.
-
The VR doesn't do this either...
-
Cant say mine do it either
-
When I had my original lights (GTi headlights) on my GL, sidelights would only come on, until I switched the switch all the way.
-
Hmm that's weird actually..
Dads VR6 doesn't do it..
But my CL did.. because I unplugged it so I could run HID's
-
Checked mine this morniing, my side lights come on on their own, no dipped headlights.
Looks better this way and thankfully i wont have to start uplugging things!
-
if your lights dont do this could be someone else already binned it, or one of the wires has snapped off the resistor. if the wires short out it'll set fire to your headlight loom

My vento has dim dip and so did my golf cl,both '94 cars.
I'd like to disable it though, can some one post a pic up of the resistor so I know what to look for?
