Worth a look (on page 14/15 - sorry don't have direct link):
http://issue.imotormag.co.uk (http://issue.imotormag.co.uk)
Includes engine noise and video drag race with Focus RS, in which the Golf R annihilates the Focus RS.
Usual negatives: The price. And it's jumped up little brother.
Boy does it look nice in Rising Blue Metallic in that video!
-
Looks cool... but I have no speakers at work, so I watched it on mute!
I think the race was a little unfair! I'd like to see them do it on fresh tar!
Will have a look again tonight with sound.
-
thanks for that mate, good find
looks great and sounds better than i hoped

Yep - I'm surpised by the sound too.
It's got a bit of R32 snarl at low revs and some nice pops from the exhaust. Obviously, at high revs, it hasn't got the lovely creamy V6 wail of the R32.

D*mn my work's 80's spec and vision cards!!! I can't see any of it!
Smart looking little review though... :afro:

thats the only type of surface that the golf will be faster on i'm afraid. really dissapointed with the look of it and the performance, i'll be keeping my bluefinned ed 30
for a while longer or untill they make the R look a bit more like a 30 grand + car, the front doesnt look any different to a bluemotion diesel imo  think vw have really missed the mark with it, its just not worth that kind of money, and yes i could afford one.

I've not heard anyone make those comments before
you don't get the subtle "Q" car styling ?
-

Eh? I kinda agree on your other points but that one is bogus. The R is quicker to 62. Focus RS tops out at about 160 but the Golf is limited to 155. Certainly round a circuit it'll wipe the floor with the RS due to the AWD, especially it it's a bit damp. Will be intereting to see one of the mags get some ring times in with one.

for me its not subtle, its a bit too understated. i think the mk6 gti looks a lot better, the slats on the front grill belong on an entry level golf not the ultimate sporting version, but its only my opinion.
-
The Golf R is the very definition of a Q car:
is a car that has high performance and an unassuming exterior. Q cars are termed such because their exterior looks little or no different from a standard
That's the point it's deliberately more rounded in it's appeal, more subtle in the way it goes about it's business but with reassuring AWD to give massive grip in most situations and real usability.
If that's not what you want go for it's opposite the focus RS or any of the other front wheel drive hot hatches.
-
did say in my opinion! if your getting one, enjoy, i'm sure its going to be brilliant to drive, i just wish they had made more of an effort with its looks.

Fair play to you, fellla. If we all liked same things, world would be a boring place.

^^^^ Wouldn't worry about those comments, especially compared to VWKev's usual contributions. :lipsrsealed:

I am really looking forward to seeing a Golf R ring time. The Golf R32 can lap the Nurburgring in around 8 minutes 49 seconds; the Audi RS4 does it in 8 minutes 9 seconds; and the Ford Focus RS does it in 8 minutes 26 seconds.
If the Golf R can do it in under 8 minutes 22 seconds, then I'll be well impressed. That's would be faster than the old BMW E46 and thus justify its price tag.

I'll go with you to the 'ring in Spring to get a time. You bring your R. I'll bring the stopwatch.

He he. Us Golf R boys are a bit more refined.
I guess you could call the GTI a "boy racer's" car. The R is more a "gentleman's racer".

Just worked out why the one in the video looks so good. It's got 19" alloys (darkened headlights). Reg plate is OY59 HNR.
Whereas, one on article page has got 18" alloys (chromed headlights). Reg plate is OY59 HNT.

Have to agree with Nick on this one. The R may well be at a considerable premium against the RS but it will beat it hands down in both 0-60 and around a track. The only way to compete with AWD is to shed weight (R.26R??) and that is something the RS does not do.

I'm more than tempted. What Ring time do you think the R would do?

That´s totally right. I sold my JCW because I was lookling for something a lot more comfortable but fast. More trunk, more space and of course high quality. I´m really happy with everything I heard in the video..
