i have got 280mm brakes at the moment, does anyone know if the 288mm calipers and carriers will bolt straight onto my hubs?   thanks Zack

I think they will.
I'm sure all Mk3 5 bolt hubs were the same...so as long as you have the calliper, carrier, discs and the correct brake hoses (they are different) then it'll all bolt on.

Mk3's are 288 anyway or am I wrong, if not you cannot get much gain with 8mm bigger disc.

upto mid 95 they were 280mm...but you'll have abs issues (and I'm sure the hubs are different as the 288 discs are offset differently)

Should be fine. According to ETKA early and late models have exactly the same hub.

As boney said, but as you say only 8mm gain...Unless the stuff is free then I wouldn't spend money upgrading, I'd just chuck a good set of pads and discs on there.

True. But if all the bits are available on the cheap, its worth upgrading.
Otherwise put a good set of pads on.
Either way there won't be any ABS problems.

I can see the point in going from say 256 to 280 but 8mm is nothing and I dont think you will notice any difference unless it is cheap / free.

My exact views. Save the pennies and buy decent pads and discs, unless you are getting all the kit for free or for stupid money.

Yes you did.
I've never been a fan of performance discs or pads, as they always seem to wear far too quickly.
A proper OE setup, which is actually working as it should is normally very good.

8mm larger is nothing...
But they are 5mm thicker (I seem to recall...25mm vs 20mm) and hence have a much higher thermal capacity...so they won't overheat and fade as fast.

Make sure the 288mm set up you get is the Mk3 288 set up, not the A3/Mk4 set up...as the offset is different.
They both fit, the Mk3 stuff goes straight on, whilst the Mk4/A3 stuff needs a 6mm spacer behind the calliper carrier to space them inwards to line up with the later offset disc....which means you also need 6mm longer high tensile longer bolts to bolt the carriers to the hubs.

If you are going later style 288s, just go the whole hog and fit 312s - if your wheels will cover them.

I stand corrected, thanks for the info.

Both 280 and 288 use the same hubs and I'm fairly sure calipers IIRC.

Thanks, well i have the calipers and carriers, i guess all i need is the flexi hoses? upgrading because they are slightly thicker and i am putting a vr in. Only have 15" wheels, im going to get 16" soon but not sure when.

If you are going 16" then there is a good chance 312mm will fit, there's a couple of set up's on E38 for £150 ATM you could sell your parts and get those if you wanna scare people behind you.

They will fit any OEM type 16" single piece wheel...but milti-piece prove a problem.
BBS RXIIs won't fit without slight calliper clearancing - about 4-5mm off the high spots.
Then, they'll fit with RXIIS also...tight, but they'll fit.

I know this because I have them on mine!

You obviously have good taste!

RXIIs are a pain to get over 312s...as I said, It'll go...but you need to get medievil with the callipers...and even then it's feeler gauge clearances.

RXs will fit though.

I couldn't interest you in a set of freshly re-furbed 7" x 16" BBS RXs could I?
I have two sets I have no use for anymore...
In addition to my 4 sets of re-furbed BBS RXIIs!

It's plain RXs I have surplus to requirements - not the 2pc Anniversary RXIIs.

I have 2 x sets of 7" x 16" ET35 BBS RX (silver) available.

I have 4 x sets of 7" x 16" ET43 BBS RXII (grey centres, silver rims) too - but I'm keeping those! They are all pukka Anniversary wheels...I had a set of Mk4 6.5" x 16" ET42 BBS RXIIs too, but sold them.
