Title: MK3 16v problems
Post by: aminorthreat1 on 20 January 2010, 20:56
ok, just bought a mk3 16v(abf) its fitted with an induction kit, but when idling the car makes one hell of a sucking noise through this. its idling at about 900rpm. it also doesnt seem to be pulling too well. any ideas?

Hmm sounds more like you have a split vacuum hose

Welcome to the site, yes sounds like a air leak.

would a split vacuum hose cause the engine to overcompensate by sucking in more air? surely this would result in higher revs? the noise is definately comin from the air filter because when i place my hand over it it stops. it also makes a hell of a noise when starting cold through the idle control valve?

Is it the correct induction kit for the car? (not universal etc) also is it a new kit? and if so check the hoses but I feel it's just the normal induction kit sound...part of the reason I don't like cones

When i had the vr i had a k&n cone fitted for a bit.
There was a squeeling noise at about 1800rpm, i thought it was a bearing on one of the ancillaries.
After a year, i swapped back to a standard box with panel filter, the noise went and never came back.

I've got a cone filter on my 16valve (previose owner ) and have had the same noise. Think it is just the horrible noise they make as i have checked/replaced all pipes and it is still there,
