Hello It’s my first time using a forum and would really appreciate some help with my GTI.
I’ve owned the car for years, overall the cars been very reliable, current millage is 92k carried out reg services, new tyres, etc.
Due to working overseas the cars been stood still for a 18 months, recently got the car through its MOT (£600), new front discs, battery, starter motor, alternator, welding around the jacking point and sills, generally the car runs well, but there’s a few nuisance problems I’d like to fix.
Will not tick over until the oil temp reaches 60C plus, the garage who carried out the MOT disconnected a small bore pipe that come from the manifold if the pipe is reconnected the car stalls
Radio, cig lighter, interior lights and central locking don’t work, but the fuses are ok
The two digital displays on the dash, don’t hold any memory basically if it stalls the time, mileage are swiped clean and read zero
High fuel usage
Smell of oil in the car.
The garage said the car needs a good run which its had but still having the same problems
I’ve thought of scrapping the car but apart from the above its looks and drive ok
Any help or guidance would be great
Apologies for the rant
One more thing are the Haynes manuals for the GTI worth buying?

Smell of oil could be down to a blocked breather.

+1
Or even a really badly smelly pollen filter. which is situated under the scuttle pannel. there cheap enough and stop them nasty smells lol.
-
Really Need the haynes manual havent a clue what and where theses parts are
Thanks for the replies

Oil breathers - On the Head.
Its a black box with 2 black rubbery pipes coming from it. Sometiimes these get gunked up with crap. causing the oil smell. and idle issues aswell.
Pollen filter - take of the scuttle pannel (carefully) its located at the bottom of the windscreen (outside of the car) the wipers are on it. its a long plastic part that runs along the bottom of the screen. Take it off and you will find the pollen filter on the passenger side of car.
