Title: Right - fix one thing only for something else to break! Does God Hate Me!?
Post by: Saskatoon on 20 January 2010, 14:11
Well does God hate me this much.  I know my sister in law think I actually AM the ANTICHRIST  - She calls me "Saint Satan" but this isn't getting funny this Golf - I'm finding the whole car a chore.  All I have done since I had it is solve problems and spend money.  I could have bought a Rubix cube and gone off with a loads of Brasses and had fun with this cash.

Firstly

I had no horn - but there was some really  tacky airhorn thing going on under bonnet with hundreds of miles of wires, I could have reconected the USA and UK via the Atlantic with a telegraphy system again there was that much speaker wires - they probably played Dixie knowing the cowboy I got it off.  I am kinda glad they didn't work and play Dixie - my neighbours are all old farts and hate all the cars I have and they must think I am a red neck being from out of town (Canada but they all think I'm American).  I must be the only guy in the street without webbed feet those.  Hayling where I live is rife, like New Forrest, Isle of Wight and Norfolk or so they say  I replaced the horn with the new horn I bought for my Alfasud. - tidy little Nautalus

Secondly

I had to buy the black metal water pipe when I bought it, only to re-replace it the other week when ice cracked it also bearing in mind I put new anti freeze in before Christmas eve.

Thirdly

Re-replaced this pipe, went to start car - there was the sound of a squeeling mouse being murdered inside engine.  I drove off and the water pump belt snapped? great

Fourthly

fixxed the belt started it up with more new anti freeze - then water was P-hissing out of a core plug on engine block.  My mechanic fixxed it.

Fithly

again checked levels started it up and water was P-hissing out of another core plug this time in the engine inlet manifold.  Got one from TPS in Portsmouth on next day for 33p.

Sixthly

I put two new indicator lamp looms in the big bumpers.  The previous owner took them with him and bodged something up that work intermitantly.  Yes only £10 roughly for GSF.  Worked in my drive way until I drove off.  The nearside refuses to operate until you hold down the stalk on collumn? this only after I had the wrong bulbs to the ones that the bodger put in it.  Back to halford in Pompey again.

Seventhly

I bought a eyebrow spoiler for it.  Got it cheap £10 unpainted.  I had primer - but went out and got the Tornado Red the other day.  It came out nice, until I fitted it.

Eighthly

The grill is being held on by god knows what.  The offside headlight rocks about and the adjuster is missing - GSF and TPS don't do them - scrapyard want a £20-25 headlight sold to give me this tiny bit.  fact is with new spoiler on top when you shut the hood you can see the top of the fixxing scews? this ain't right.  I had one on my old Golf years ago and never noticed them.  So I got a funny feeling the wrong slam panel is on car? I might be able to pull hood forward a smidge - but this is very irritating.

Ninethly

It appears the front lower engine mount is knackered - back to GSF and another helping of my debit card.

Tenthly

It also appears I must have left the car open the other day and someone stole the MAC Tools c-spanner from the glovebox - I was going to soften up the springs and raise the car this weekend they also took the golfball gearknob?

Eleventhly

Battary is knackered to now - again back to Halford for one - kerr ching £50 debit card theft

Twenthly

There another water leak - from expansion tank.  It has got a crack in it - fixxed this

Thirteenthly

There's another Water leak - not from the engine but the truck probably from his smoked aftermarket  lights which arent sealed.

Fourteenthly

Reverse switch on gearbox gone - I can fuse it together to make them work - so need one of these as well now

I Must be hated by God so much - what does a man have to do to have some fun.  I'm surprised he didn't just smite me with some bolt of lightning earlier when I stepped outside?

MOT is in a few weeks and it needs tyres all round I fear and probably new rotors on the front.  The guy I bought it off must be laughing his head off.  The car is structually very good but boy has he been bodging stuff.  I don't think it was a cheap Golf or a dear Golf - middle of the road - and it looked alright.

This all after the sage with my Octavia RS and is second engine blowing up. replaced the engine again then new oil pump fails and destroys the bearings in the turbo.  That little amount was £1000 first engine - £1000  Second £100 for oil pump - then £475 + vat for tubro rebuid + all mechanic fees.

I have just spent £3000 on new windows and doors for the house which are being fitted Thursday - Come on GOD!!!! Sort some snow out so the fitters won't come - How about a Beoing jet engine falling off a plane through the roof - Do You Best you Mutha!!!

Wow mate that is bad. I hear its often abit 'luck of the draw' on these things, but it really sounds like youve taken the cake on this one.

Stick with it though, with such simple cars there is only so much that can go wrong so keep at it!

I am worried about this car being like a concours car eventually as every bit on the car is becoming brand new.

Haha I wrote something similar but decided it would not be an appropriate comment given your situation.

Who resprayed it - Gold Finger.  Jeeeesus.

trick it never get a respray more than the value of the car or except insurance quote for more than the value of the car.

You will be so paranoid now about it getting scratched - You will find one every week, and eventually you will give up and hold your hands up that it was a waste of time - unless you parked it at the bottom of the ocean before it was resprayed of course.

I have been there with a 1972 Beetle.  got it resprayed for £1700 but with bodywork, I found scratches on it from day 1, it breaks your little heart all that money you spent.

On a serious note I know a guy in Portsmouth who is aprofessional car painter.  he's doing my Alfasud for £650 inc a bit of bodywork to the kit.  I have seen his work - he doesn't turn out anything your not 1000% happy with and his work is good - anyone wants a full respray near Portsmouth or you can travel that distance he your name - I will have to hook you all up - one at a time.

Know what your saying... But the car is and was a minter other than the paintwork... Its IMO money well spent...

And its bumped up the price so I'll not lose anything... Not that I am planning on selling it...

Again the price of car paints has rocketed.  A Golf (I am being careful here) is a fairly small easy car to prep yourself and get the professional to paint etc with 2K

What made it £1700 - The most I have heard a car being repainted down near Portsmouth is about £1000.  Well it's a nice Golf but like I said you will horrified to find scratches and dings in it every day.

To fit and prep new wing, Tailgate & Bonnett...

Full prep work on the rest of the car, strip down etc etc... 2 pack high gloss paint, then putting all back together

Plus £300 VAT...

Mate..mate..mate

wings, and bonnets are just patience and planning and a few bolts.

I can understand the price if you just said get on with it and I'm not getting my hand dirty?

Didn't mean to offend you - you got what you paid for - that paint will be good for another 10 years at least, and its a good one can't take this from you. just not the price for me.

But it's like that old cliche - it's not what you know, it's who you know.

Non taken....

Yep I did just give'm the car and said get on with it.... I dont know the first thing about body work... & TBH I am over the moon with the finish...

The whole car has had all the dints and little prangs taken out, every panel has been redone...

I don't think its out of the window price wise... Bet you if it was an insurance job it would have been 3k..

Yes I could have had done cheaper...

But I am a beliver in "you pays for what you gets"....& I trust the guys who have done the work as they are also heavily in Dubs and some of the stuff they have done has appeared in the Press....
