Just after a bit of help regarding the SD card for my RCD510. Sorry for the basic qustions but i'm not much of a technology kind of guy!
1.Do you just download songs onto the SD card from itunes?
2. How do the songs appear on the screen of the radio? Do they come up as separate albums etc, just like an ipod?
3. How much memory would I need on the SD card?
Thanks
PS - lovin my new golf gti, met black pearl effect with 18" monza's. Black cars are a nighmare to keep clean in this weather though

Download the songs from your computer onto the sd card in mp3 format, you can BACK UP your own cd collection onto your computer then copy them onto the sd card.I have a 2Gb sd card and have over 30 albums on it.

Stuff bought from iTunes won't work as it won't be in MP3 format.

May be better to look at USB or iPod if you have the MDI in the armrest (see below)...loads of reference stuff via the Forum Search...

Before you read below; I haven't got my GTi yet, so have not got much detailed knowledge of the RCD510 except what I picked up on test drives at the dealer last August [Hard to remember that far back]
But, why don't you just plug your ipod into the USB connector in the armrest instead of using an SD card? You could probably have your entire collection on there.

Guys, thanks for all your replies.
Sounds like I'll just use my ipod for the meantime !
Cheers

Each to their own but if you have up-graded the stereo and speakers I personally would not use compressed music. Your best to use Cd or a mp3 with uncompressed music like on an iPod. The difference is quite significant especially with quality speakers like Dynaudio.

Correct me if I am wrong but mp3 is compressed, as is music on ipods is it not??

Yes sorry about that. Most MP3 players can ether play compressed music or full CD quality. Think they call the no loss ACC. In my case I went into iTunes and changed to no loss.
However if you want to change your MP3 player to cd quality you would first need to delete all your music and download again. As I wrote its a personal choice but given the quality of the Dynaudio speakers its well worth doing doing.

The head unit can play ACC files via the ipod.

Here's what I do with mine.................
1 Burn your iTunes purchased songs (or saved songs) to a CD-RW (then you can use the same CD over and over again coz it's rewritable). Make sure you change the settings in iTunes to burn to .mp3
2 Rip that CD in Windows Media Player - the files are now .mp3 format (which will play in the gti). Make sure you change the settings in Windows Media Player to Rip at the maximum compression the Golf willa ccept - 320kbps - it is better sound quality than both the iTunes sh!te and the standard .wmv or .mps format of 128 kbps.
3 Erase the CD-RW and start again with the next lot of songs
4 Drag and drop those files to the SD Card (Golf only accepts 2Gb maximum)
5 Copy the files on the SD Card to the HDD in the car.
6 You can organise the files into folders pretty easily but it takes a bit of trial and error
I tend to have a load of songs in 1 folder coz you can then play that folder in random (VW call it MIX) mode and away you go
For my favourite artists I make folders with just their stuff in so I can play music from only that folder if I wish.
I have around 2300 songs on the hard drive (it is 20Gb capacity) and it is about 75% full. Perfect. It took me a whole weekend to store and complete the transfer but it was worth it. Only need to do it once then add new albums as you buy 'em.
Better sound quality than ipod, nothing to plug in and easy to use from steering wheel or touch screen.
What is there not to like about this?

Toon,
That sounds pretty fool proof. Cheers for taking the time.
Didnt realise the max SD card the gti will accept is 2Gb, still thats plenty.
Ta v much

I hadn't realised the RCD had a HDD - thought that was only the RNS [sat nav] variant ??

Toon is it not possible to drag the Mp3 songs straight of the CD (RW) to the Harddisk of the GTI...

Not sure - didn't try that (as I had many more songs to burn than would fit on a 720MB CD-RW)

We may be talking about different units here - The original query was for RCD510 - I don't have that - I have the DVD Navigation version (not sure of the number) and that DEFINATELY has a 2GB SD card limit
-
Fair enough.
The RCD510 as subject line can definitely go up to 32Gb.
Strange that the RNS can only go to 2Gb!!

iirc it boils down to version of FW you have. the latest allows you to use SDHC (dont quote me on this though)
