Title: Buying a mk2
Post by: shaolindan on 20 January 2010, 08:01
Good morning folks,

After work I will be going to look at and probably buy k2 Golf Gti. It is a 5 dr, G  reg with 99K on the clock. It has had an engine rebuild, suspension overs, new angel eyes, slight respray on filler  and drivers door, so outside it looks mint. Interior needs some work though. (was thinking of getting leather seats from a storm?) Can anyone give some pointers for anything I should check on the car before buying?

The slight re-spray on the filler is a BIG no no, if its starting to go mate it needs chopping out and replacing. Not to much of a job but still a job. The best advice i can give it to pay a garage a tenner to ramp it, so you can look at the underside. Looking out for rust, oil, holes in exhaust, fuel pump looks ok, fuel lines, brake lines, ect.... DONT BE AFRAID TO WALK AWAY!

I'd be asking why it needed a rebuild at 99k - what happened?

The rebuild, filler and angel eyes would make me walk away personally.

One simple rule when buying a mk2,BUY ON BODY,evrything else can be sorted out but if its got tin worm and is rusty then walk away! check the sills, jacking points on the front and back, round the front screen and on the tailgate.Buy with your head and not with your heart!

Hi thanks for the advice,

Firstly, I meant the filler flap, not actual filler. It looks mint externally, but I will check the body carefully. The engine rebuild was done as part of the project, (only really needed valve stems replacing but they got carried away, they both work in a VW service centre.) which they have had to abandon because of babies arriving. So all work is VW certified and used VW parts. Looking at the photographs the body looks to be in great nick, but I will check the sills, wheel arches, hatch sill etc. I know I need to replace and work on a lot of the interior, so it's any common mechanical problems that I should look out for that I'm primarily interested in.
- I think I have explained the rebuild and the filler thing better now, however why would the angel eyes be a put off?
Oh and 5 door is useful for us.

I know VWs quite well have owned mk1 and mk2s in the past, just not a GTi.

How much does he wasnt for it?

I will be selling my MK2 Tornado Red 1990 "H" 3 door

Yes it's a driver and not a gti - Looks like a GTi but as fast - so it's cheap to insure. that make sense? probably not

It is structurally very good - In the last month I have bought loads of new genuine parts for it to bring it back up to scratch - the previous owner, must really have neglected it, although took his time modifying it.

It has ever so slight dents two of which you have to look at it in the right light and position. then there is a slight crease in the rear quarter in the corner where previous bloke said he reverse it into a wall - it's not that noticable.  The car doesn't have power steering but the power pump is present - meaning the rack probably failed, and someone in the past tried to save money by putting a standard rack in.

Big Bumpers - less fog lights for some reason - might get some yet
It has full coilover adjusters
DTM Exhaust
TSW black Alloys
It has Leather Recaro seats with GTi door cards.  Has my Alpine ipod headunit - with sony Xplod speakers in shelf and doors fitted

I am just going to put 4 new tyres on it for the MOT for February so a new test cert and them the tax run out 31st March 2010.

I am going to need cash to respray my Alfasud - I will want £700ish for it once she has passed the MOT

Interesting offer. However for £200 more I'm getting a great 8v GTi ( I hope!). Although I would like your leather seats. (it has got a 6 CD multichanger JVC unit too).
Unfortunately for you, I have read about the pipe cracking and wanting to put a 16v unit in it. Had you done that, I would have been interested. But I don't want a driver, especially one with a list of complaints that reaches 14 points. Interior sounds great though.

The other area to check is around the Battery... see if its leaked UNDER it and check the chassis there as my Mechanic mate said if its gone at that point you might as well scrap it...

The Skuttle bottom of the windscreen, where the dummy plu for LHD cars and the Filler cap are also very important to check!!

This car's stereo thumps - when connected to my ipod it's got 500+ albums, 450+ Music videos and Season 1-4 of Pimp my ride and the actual podcast at the time of Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross saying to Andrew Sachs that Brand Fffed his grand daughter - I had the ipod signed at Portsmouth Guidhall last year by Brand in Person too, you can't beat that my friend with a Victor Company of Japan Radio and 6 discs in the boot can ya dowg  - what are discs anyway that's so Betamax. this is the 21st Century not 1964.

I will probably get linched now but,   An 8v aint all that? just more to insure and put gas in.  this driver would keep up - ever heard of the hare and the tortoise, the tortoise always wins

Are you saying that he should buy your car because it has a fancy radio in it and holes cut in the shelf for big speakers?

Also, if he want a GTI, a Driver, nice though they are, just won't do.

Nowt wrong with a changer, but surely casettes are the only way to listen to music in an 80's car?

I will only have an 1980's manufactured stereo radio casette in my Alfasud with original speakers for sure - This is one time I don't mind going back in tech for the sake of prodgeny and linearage.
